I know this has been done before and I have read all the threads and looked at the photos, but somehow the PS Type A in me won't rest until I have my own thread to discuss!

The situation: it's been a big big big year in many ways, but the two biggest events have been a) the birth of my daughter, and b) the passing of my father. I was going to wait until a significant anniversary to get a biggish eternity, but I figured that this year was probably the most monumental I'd have in a long time, so why not now?

The Issews:

1. What size stones? I don't think I can go larger than 25 pointers, and I think that even 25 pointers may be a little big. I'd like to be able to wear this ring whenever I want to and not worry about whether it's appropriate/too loud/too ostentatious/too chunky. Currently I'm a SAHM, but at work I don't want to be ostentatiously blingy.

Currently I'm thinking about 20 pointers or just a little above.

2. Which setting? I am tossing up between a classic open basket, or a U prong. I want the setting to be LOW (for comfort but also for the look), and I want the scalloped contour of the stone girdles to be very clear. Obviously I would prefer less metal showing from the top, but understand that a U prong necessitates a bit more - is that right?

I have quotes from IDJ and ERD that are very comparable and I feel comfortable choosing either vendor.

If anyone has any pics of 20-25 pointers on a size 4.5-5 finger, I'd love to see them!

I would get a quote from WF also--just got my 15pt shared prong eternity band from them. Their ACA's really sparkle! I chose the closed basket design b/c of the lower profile compared to the open basket. I also preferred the less metal look of a shared prong compared to the u prong for an eternity band.

I like the U prong because they are generally set lower (which means less "poke" or "squish" between fingers) andyou can see the full diamond - I like that look! Some have said with a U prong, it could fit a tad looser than your regular size. Be sure to discuss that with whichever vendor you go thru. Since you know you can't size it, would you consider a small sizing bar for any future sizings down the road? or a slight size larger but with sizing beads that you could remove as your hands change?

This has been quite the year for you, Pancake. I'm sorry about the loss of your father - that must be very hard to cope with. Hopefully the joy of your daughters birth, will help and maybe you will see characteristics of him, in her!

Best of luck in your hunt for the perfect eternity!

Thanks mom2boys - I will get in touch with WF and see what they say. Their customer service is so great that I'm sure I'll hear back before the day is out!

enerchi - your post was so kind, it almost made me cry. Thank you... it has been the hugest of years and I am so grateful to have a wonderful mother, siblings, husband and best baby ever!

I thought U prongs would sit higher than a basket? Is that incorrect? Getting confused now...
