Silver Acid Results

I'm getting weird acid test results with my silver acid test. It stays orange; no change in color. I even bought a new bottle in case it was the bottle. Same. Some pieces it turns bright red, I've seen it turn green. but these last 2 pieces it stays the same color. One it got specs of red but largely stayed orange for a long time, then turned dark grey and left a creamy stain.
I cant find what it means if the solution literally doesnt change color at all???

My understanding of using acid on silver is that if it turns bright red it is high content silver.
Anything else means not sterling silver. Brass or copper based metals will turn green / blue. I would think that if there is no reaction whatsoever it is a different type base metal (Steel, iron, nickel, aluminium base).

@Bonsai
I'm not clear on how you are doing your testing.
Are you making streaks on the testing stone, and applying solution to the streaks?
The acid should turn red or a dark rust color if you have silver.

Yes, you never test on the item, always do a scratch on the testing stone. The acids can permanently mark the piece being tested otherwise.
