Hi! I’m pretty new here, but I keep seeing the phrase “ask them for Pricescope quality diamonds” thrown around. Someone will say “I love so-and-so jewelry, I always ask them for price scope quality diamonds”.

Please explain!
And thank you all for this forum, I learn so much every day here. <3

It is a Pricescope-ism that applies only when referring to ID Jewelry. The reason: The vendor recognises that PSers are known to be more discerning, and will be given more attentive service and the best quality goods in a packet.

I personally disagree with the practice - I don’t like that PS has normalized preferential treatment for those with a “passphrase”, rather than encouraging vendors to treat all customers in the same (excellent) fashion and maintain the same quality and quality control standards across all clients’ projects. But that’s just my opinion, and I acknowledge that this always happens in the real world - longtime customers and big spenders will always get preferential treatment. And it’s not exactly a stretch to presume that odds of running into those people are higher on a diamond board! I would happily shop with and recommend IDJ, should need and opportunity arise.

No one really knows what PS quality diamonds are because they are usually smaller and ungraded. If you buy from WF that usually means ACA. I doubt IDJ is using that quality because the price is always lower. That’s not to say they are not beautiful but they are not the best Of the best.

It is normally used in reference to ID Jewelry. I would never under any circumstances use that term. Why? It is not specific enough! It means excellent cut (but that's a really broad range), probably SI clarity, and sometimes ungraded stones, especially when they are melee stones such as in a tennis bracelet. I like ID Jewelry just fine, but I would be giving much more specific specs for the diamonds.

I guess, when people say "pricescope quality" - it alerts vendors that the consumer has some (and many here a lot of) knowledge about diamonds that an ordinary customer does not. Vendors know this, thus they also know they can get away with selling less than a "pricescope quality" to those who do not know diamonds. Most people do not know any better - "diamond is a diamond, as long as it is real." If vendors can sell products of a lesser quality and people are willing to pay, why offer a better quality? Sadly.

Ohhhh got it!!! Thank you!

Thank you, makes sense now! :) I love this group!

Expensive! :$$):

Brilliant, sparkling, firing, big!

PS quality = minimum Tiffany quality or above.

It started out meaning well matched, eyeclean/no haze, and good looking IS/ASET images but not necessarily h&a. It was also but not always a higher color and clarity grade.
One vendor started using it for their premium melee then a few others picked it up as consumers asked for it.
The meaning will vary vendor to vendor so confirm.

Not to argue, but personally I wouldn’t consider Tiffany diamonds to be PS quality.
I have my Mom’s engagement ring, and after learning on PS what a well cut stone looks and purchasing an ACA, I considered recutting the Tiffany stone.

While I agree with what you are saying ;-), I think that your comment proved her point exactly! She said "Tiffany quality or above." & to the outside world Tiffany diamonds are the pinnacle of quality, so we appear to be some picky folks! Which we are & that's ok! Everyone has a hobby or an interest!

When I work with IDJ, I do not use the term "PS quality" - I simply tell Yekutiel that I expect high quality and well cut stones G/H and vs clarity. I have recently received a pair of custom earrings made by IDJ and they are spectacular. He does not disappoint.
