I'm pretty sure I'm going to set the Homer stone in a bezeled three stone, mixed metals, with diamond sidetones. The hold up is that I can't decide whether to use old cuts (OECs) for sidetones or round brilliants. I wish I could find Portuguese-cut diamonds -- now that would be one firecracker of a ring, LOL

I assume thats a concave cut? if so, id LOVE to see it with these. They are so perfectly matched they even have the same undertone.

Niel, you have a real talent for searching the diamond sites, and a great eye! Those stones are great. My Richard Homer chrysoberyl is actually Portuguese cut, not concave cut. Richard does occasionally cut traditionally faceted stones or other specialty cuts. Portuguese-cut stones are very brilliant, with many facets. So the criss-cuts you found could work beautifully with my Homer chrysoberyl. You can see the stone in my early post; it was originally set in the halo with lavender sapphires. The setting was beautiful, but was way too fussy for me. So I had the chrysoberyl removed and sold the setting. I considered selling the chrysoberyl, too, but I just couldn't bring myself to part with it. The stone takes my breath away when I look at it. It is just so bright an alive. It's been loose for several years, and I keep it in its box on my desk. I like looking at it, but it's time for it to find a home. It's 6.5 millimeters, so sidetones in the .40 range would be lovely for a three-stone

I know what you mean. I was helping my BIL with an e ring, as many remember. I bought the most stunning step cut chryso from Peter toracca. Something happened with the setting, and his budget was so small, he didn't have the money to fix it. It was cheaper to return the stone and but a yellow sapphire. So he did.

As soon as put it in the box I missed it like crazy. He quickly had it sent out to a B&M for sale, so it was long gone :blackeye: :blackeye: :blackeye:

I tried finding another one. Contacted all the vendors i could think of that could cut a nice emerald cut. nobody had any rough like my stone. I was casually looking for months!

Then one day PT had it back on his sight! the B&M must not have been able to sell it (who knows why!!) and it was back on his sight. I quickly snapped it up. He was willing to sell it to me at the original price he sold it to me last year. Its currently en route to me, as its been set in a two tone setting.... I'm TOO excited! The current vendor pic doesn't adequately show the color of the stone. So i won't have picks till tuesday. But I'm so excited!

I actually think the prices on chrysos are still decent, you just need to know where to look, and that's all I'm saying. ;-)

Can you give me a clue...Ebay vendors?

What is a decent price for a 3-4 carat chryso?

Yes, ebay vendors, although ebay seems to have a bad name here. There are some decent vendors though, and chrysoberyl is one of those stones that isn't simulated/manipulated/over treated like some gems on ebay. I've seen 3 to 4 carat chrysoberyls with nice color going anywhere from $50 to $500/ct. They're priced all over the place, so I suggest shopping around. They're very beautiful when precision cut.

Yes, the stone has an antique look to it, and it also has a very high crown, which I like.

Thanks, TL.

I don't think the window on your chryso is distracting at all. With the high crown, it looks "right".

Um, I'm dying to see her on your hand Niel. (Ran over here from FB in hopes of finding hand photos. ) She looks *fabulous*! Unsurprisingly, C did a fantastic job! And the highly saturated apple-y green/yellow color is gorgeous!

I had always loved the color of peridots but was always worried of it's durability... Finding out about Chyrsoberyls opened up a whole new world to me! Thank you ;)) (Very new to colored stones world)

Chyrsoberyl also has finer luster than peridot, and a higher refractive Index. In other words, they tend to look more sparkly, so it's not just about durability. Peridot tends to have a waxy luster. Some peridot are pretty, but you need a good cut/polish to make them look their best.

Niel, the ring came out great, and I love the setting.

the design came about by combining elements from a couple different settings I liked. I wasn't sure how it would turn out, having never done that before, but I got lucky!

Just went through your thread & I have to say, that is one helluva ring Packrat! I love the setting & that gorgeous stone :appl:

Haha tell me about it. CvB offered to make a setting SUPER similar to hers and I was like "oohhh that sounds amazing, but I just can't do that to her. "

Niel, delicious chryso and lovely setting - art deco inspired? I need some inspiration for setting mine.

Here's a pic of my vanadium chryso from Brad at Gem Trader. vchryso1_0.gif

This is his picture of it. DH was impressed with its sparkly nature. vchryso1.gif

Niel, your ring helped me decide to go with CVB for my art deco inspired custom engagement rings. Now I'm eagerly/nervously waiting for the first CAD images!

What to show some of my chrsoberyl too...

From left: Two colorless chrysoberyl ( 1,55 and 1,56 ct ) from Burma, two Vanadium chrysoberyl ( both 0,77 ct ) from Tanzania.
a 0,73 ct Princess from Tanzania - this is not a vanadium chrysoberyl - to much yellow!
a 1,70 ct from Tanzania ( greenish yellow - a bit "neon")
a "Siebenstern" chrysoberyl 0,99ct from Tanzania - cut by Uli Zeisberg / Osirisgems
a windowed but neon greenish yellow from Sri Lanka 0,55 ct and a 0,85 ct from Simbabwe - looks like a drop of olive oil!

Nice, Marlow! The vanadiums are always a treat to see, but I like ol' Olive oil the best. Been looking for a darker chryso myself - seems a bit more "manly".
