Should I upgrade setting?

IMG_1723.JPG I have a 2.5 carat, E colour princess cut, I like my current setting but because I wear the ring 24/7 I've scratched myself and hubby I'm wondering if I should halo to soften the edges? I kind of like the slight asscher look of the halo in the pic above

The halo you found is really nice and very much the current look. You'll scratch less on the corners of the halo than your present corner prongs. Here are a few different types of halos to give you some ideas.

If you want to eliminate the prongs, what about a bezel set halo with a similar outline as the one you like (although for outline, I tend to like more strongly cut corners like the 3rnd on down)?

Brillant Earth (don't set outside stone, so you'd have to go custom). https://www.brilliantearth.com/custom-rings/Baguette-and-Pavé-Diamond-Halo-Ring-1371691/

I wonder if you could even just get the mounting reworked for a bezel look? I'm not sure if jewelers can do that but maybe

I think I could change the design - setting would be a custom order because of the size of my diamond. I will definitely keep my current setting so I could switch back if I went off the halo in the future!

I like your current setting much better.

Depending on how much you prefer a reset over a modification (not than any of might use a problem as a good reason for a reset ), I wonder if they could change your V-prongs for double prongs or tab-prongs?

I don't like a halo that wide on a stone the size of yours. I prefer the look of your stone as it is, to be honest. But if I wanted a halo, it would have to be done by Victor Canera or Steven Kirsch who do very fine micropave halos.

Their work is beautiful but as I live in the UK it wouldn't really be a viable option The stone is fairly large and I'm a small ring size so a more delicate setting would be better for me

I like the concept of a setting with different prongs, that don't catch/poke vs halo.

If you do decide to go the reset route, did you ask your jeweler if he/she is able to show you stock settings from reputable vendors such as Ritani
https://www.ritani.com or Gabriel https://www.gabrielny.com. You may save $$ instead of going to a full custom ring. Many of these settings are fabulous and you can ask to see it before committing and try it out to see if you are pleased with the quality and feel.

I live in the UK so I don't believe the choice of stock settings is anything like the selection in the US I'll google and see if any you mentioned are available here. The setting I have now is a stock setting but a customised version.

After seeing halos be a strong trend for over ten years now, I adore the way your current ring looks! I would talk to your jeweler about possibly softening the edges of the ring instead of resetting it. Take the conservative route, and see how that works out before resetting. Your ring is just gorgeous, and you can't beat a nice size accented solitaire!

Thank you for the lovely compliment. It really is a beautiful diamond and when I got it I definitely wanted a solitaire. I guess when you see halos it make the solitaire setting look a bit plain but maybe that's a good thing. I think the jeweller would be able to smooth the sharp edges a little.

Hi Rivendell,
I think the halo changes the look of your ring. So, as Rockysalamander suggested, if the scratching or poking is the only reason for thinking about a reset, I think a setting that doesn't scratch/poke would be a better idea. V prongs, claw prongs, tab prongs are all good idea. Unless of course, you like the look of the halo, then go for!

But Winks_elf may be right - check with your jeweler about softening the edges!

I too am a fellow brit so appreciate how difficult it can be to reset a stone. I personally love a solitaire. If you can find a good jeweller who can soften your prongs or provide a similar look with a setting that is less scratchy, that might be a better option for you :)

Over here most people don't even consider resets or upgrading I don't know if that's your take on it too I'm super happy with my stone and that's the important bit easy enough to switch a setting

Your stone is stunning, huge and amazing colour for the UK. People don't tend to upgrade I agree. I do think though, it has to be comfy enough to wear every day so resetting is sensible and you don't have to go crazy. A Halo will make it look huge if that's what you want but the 2.5 carats will speak for itself as a solitaire imho :-)

Resetting is fine. You'll just need to find a jeweller who is insured to reset it who will deliver the quality and pricing you need.
