Should I set loose diamond? Is this mounting dated? Opinions Please

Hi friends,

Some of you have seen that I have a loose diamond listed - I am wondering if I should set it in a semi-mount that I have had for a long time or if I should leave it loose. It was my original wedding set so I have a engagement ring and wedding band. I have been trying to sell them for a while on ebay with no interest. Is the set dated? Would I be better off putting it in a solitaire mounting that I have to purchase? I do not want to outlay a lot for a mounting that someone may end up changing - they may be looking for a pendent. But I feel that just like some people can't envision how a house can look after renovation some people can not envision a diamond without a mounting. I will post photos below of the diamond sitting on top of the mount.
 
I think the setting is unique and I like it. If I were you I won’t change it and just sell it loose if the person is not interest on the setting. Just my thoughts.
 
Dont spend money to put it in a setting (at least not for Pricescopers). Are you going to put your stone on ebay? You might want to put
it somewhere where it will get more than PSers viewing it. Put it both on loupetroop and diamondbistro.
Pricescopers like old stones but they usually want smaller tables and chunky facets or either flowery or checkboard looking facets through the
center.

Does the diamond have a GIA report? I think it will be hard to sell without one. I think your setting is really pretty. It is hard to know whether resetting it would help or not. You might do as well just selling the diamond to a jeweler and sell the setting on LT. Do you not want to set the diamond in a pendant for yourself?

Thank you! Yes I will likely put it on all the above sites. I am a little nervous about selling it myself for fear of someone switching the diamond but felt safer here if there was a established known person interested. I also know not being the ideal diamond and also not a antique that there is a lesser demand on this forum.

It does have one - I wish I could but I just made a large purchase and promised to sell something - I am greedy and want to keep all my gems!

Honestly, I would keep it for a pendant, personally. Retail for a good cut .90 I VVS1 is about $3700. Excellent cuts were closer to $3900.

This stone is fair cut, so it likely would be less retail than good cut. So if it was worth $3500 retail, and you sold it for 50-75% of retail, you'd be looking at $1750-2625, realistically. It's just very unlikely to sell near the asking price. I think it is better for a pendant than a ring. I am going to make a pendant for one of my daughters with my original diamond which is similar to this in that it has a large table and low crown.

That is great feedback so thank you - I am wanting to sell it and not keep it. The only information I had on price is what I got from the cutter so I realistically need to lower the price. Maybe I should set the price at 2500 and then I will have to add the ebay fees - I think they are at 15% now with paypal fees. Thoughts? I will look and see if there is a way to set two price points on a single item. Diamond loose or Diamond in a setting and with wedding band.
 
I think you can sell the setting in a separate listing. You can show it with the diamond and say setting available in separate listing. That way, if someone wants the setting, they can buy it alone, and someone can buy the diamond alone or also buy the setting. I think I'd list the wedding band separately, also. Maybe price the diamond at $2700 with best offer. Then you can decide how much you'll accept.

I like this set up for the listing, I had not thought of doing it that way - I think I'm going to do exactly as you suggested. I'm working on the ebay listings now. Thanks for the advice!
 
I love your setting! I don't think it looks dated at all. I think it looks very timeless and classic.
 
Thank you everyone - I am now on loupe troop, ebay, and diamond bistro - I have lowered the price to 2500 except for ebay to account to wiggle room on offers and fees. I appreciate all the expertise!
 
I like this setting, pretty and unique. I honestly would keep this as opposed to selling since you will not be getting as good a price and this looks gorgeous. It would also make a great heirloom.
 
Sold to a good friend! She loved the diamond and the mounting and the price was right for her budget. She is super happy and so am I.
