Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey...

Hi all,

My GF and I were walking around and she saw this setting and loved it:

http://www.tacori.com/engagement/rings/2638rdp65.html

I think it is pretty nice, although I find the diamond sits a little too high. That being said, she really likes it and we haven't had much luck finding anything out she likes. Issue is, the setting seems to be around 2800-3000$. That seems a little pricey. I am shooting for a diamond around 7000$, and the setting in this case would cost about 30-40% of the whole ring. Is this appropriate? I was hoping to spend only 8000$ in total, but perhaps I can adjust. I think these are my options:

1. Man up and buy it, find it cheaper if possible (unlikely)
2. Find a different setting (might not be easy)
3. Get it custom made

The ring has a lot of intricate details, so I don't think it would be possible to have it made exactly the same. Or maybe it is not that hard?

What are your thoughts?

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

Honestly I would contact Good Old Gold or Whiteflash, as they both carry Tacori as well as ideal cut stones. I believe GOG, and maybe WF, will work with you on a "package price".

Whatever you do, do not compromise on the cut quality of the center stone!

The Tacori setting is beautiful, but if you decide to go the custom route I know Engagement Rings Direct and Brian Gavin have both created variations on Tacori designs (they can't copy it exactly for copyright reasons).

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

I honestly wouldn't consider trying to replicate that particular ring. It would take a little off the price if she didn't have to have the diamonds on the shank (band). It is a beautiful ring, and I also recommend Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash for top quality diamonds and Tacori settings. It is best to get the diamond and setting from the same vendor whenever possible. And I'd get the setting in platinum.

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

Is Platinum that much better? Because white gold loses colour over the years?

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

Also, it makes sense that getting the whole package would lead to a better deal, but on WF for example, adding two items together does not alter the price at all.

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

If you use gOG they will work within your budget...also speaking to either GOG or WF directly is better than just pricing what you see n their web sight.

Please there are discounts for pricescope members.

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

So for platinum, we are looking at 3600$, which would leave 6400$ for the diamond. Is this a reasonable ratio? I thought spending more on the diamond was better. Darn her and her expensive tastes!

Also, I am in Canada, is buying from an online USA company the same as buying within Canada?

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

I will be really honest with you... there is no way in h*** I'd pay that kind of money for that type of setting. ::) It is a very basic look -- what exactly does she like about it that she couldn't find something very similar elsewhere? Have you looked at Vatche or Mark Morrell? They have some really gorgeous settings. I might say "go ahead and buy it" if it was one of Tacori's signature intricate settings, but not this one. To me, paying Tacori prices would warrant a ring that was very Tacori-esque (and not so similar to so many other styles). I'd try to find something very similar and save your cash. This is just my opinion though. ;))

However... if it's the Tacori name she wants or if she's not going to be satisfied with anything less than that exact setting, then that's a whole different ballgame -- you'll probably just have to pay for it.

Also, I'd try to spend about 80% on the diamond, since you can update a setting for so much less. I'd rather have a nicer, potentially larger stone in a plain band over a smaller one in an expensive setting. Again, just my opinion.

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

She isn't really into the name, she just liked the setting. We have literally looked at hundreds, and this is her favourite. She likes the pave, the fact that it is tapered, and she likes the intricate detailing on the upper portions of the band (around and under the diamond and such). Is there anything similar out there?

It is a beautiful setting, so I hope think you didn't think I was putting it down!! :halo:

I think your best bet would be to call ERD and just ask them to honestly tell you if they can replicate (or come very close to) the Tacori she likes. They do a very good job with some of their replica rings, so maybe they can! :)) Explain each thing that she loves about it and see what they say. I may be totally off base here, but there isn't a whole lot of metal or diamonds to warrant a huge price. You'll most likely end up paying $2500-3000-ish if custom... It's hard for me to justify some of the prices for minimal metal/stonework. :sun:

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

Well if custom is around 3000$ I could just pay the extra 600$ to make sure its the original, no?

Have you gotten quotes? Don't just assume its 600. Could be 1100 different.

Sorry, OP... just got back to this. I agree with Niel -- I'd go ahead and get some price quotes. Worst case scenario, you can always get the Tacori. I may be wrong, but I think you'll probably be able to save about $1k -- maybe more. Let us know what you find out -- good luck to you! :))

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

I have sent a few emails out looking for quotes, I will update soon hopefully.

I have to agree - I wouldn't pay that kind of money for that setting either. I'm sure that with a little shopping around, she could find others that she likes.

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

Do you guys know of any similar settings? Pave, tapered, with some pretty stuff on the upper part of the setting?

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

It's a pretty setting but I think it's really overpriced for what it is. There are similar settings out there without the Tacori price tag.

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

Hello! I'm just gonna add my 2 cents here. If you truly feel that your girlfriend will absolutely love this setting and anything else will just not match up, then I would suggest getting the Tacori ring. While other vendors may offer better prices for similar designs, Tacori is unlike anything else. My engagement ring is from there, so I can speak to that. I would suggest getting 18k gold though. I understand that platinum is maybe preferable, but gold will not only drop the price but the design is not nearly as intricate as some of the other designs, so I would think that gold would be just fine. Unless it's the 4 prongs that would lead to suggesting platinum?

Just some things to think about. :)

Great to hear it! Please share links :) or names

And thank you for the suggestion meganmomma. I think something else could be nearly as good or just as good, but I haven't seen any. I am VERY open to suggestions. Maybe I should start another thread lol

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

I *know* that ERD and Brian Gavin have done similar styles, but I cannot for the life of me find the pics! BG has a gallery, and I know it's in there, but it's very difficult to navigate, but I'll keep looking.

Here is the thread https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/our-1-23-ct-platinum-rose-gold-vintage-halo-chris-erd.189639/

Depending on what size you end up with your center stone, that'll change how much exactly the setting will be. Seeing as you don't have both yet, it'll be a bit of a balancing act to get both parts within your budget. I am a fan of that setting as well for the reasons your gf mentioned, but agree that it is unfortunately priced high due to the brand. Please keep us updated on what quotes you get back on the Tacori, because if you don't go that route I think ERD would be a great way to go custom and come very close (also noted that I love their claw prongs much better than the lil stubs Tacori has as well).

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

I'm in Canada and you should know that it is not the same when you buy online from the US. There is a good website (Thefinalcost.com) which will tell you how much you can expect to pay, depending on the province you are shipping to. It generally works out about 10 - 12%, depending on whether you use your credit card. Hope this helps! BTW - love the setting that Niel posted!!

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

Thanks Canada girl. I think it works out to what I would pay in taxes, so its exactly the same, no? The websites wouldn't charge tax, so I would pay it provincially.

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

Have you had a look at some of the settings on www.gabrielny.com ? They have the Gabriel and the Avida line - both have similar options (SIMILAR, not the exact look) to the tacori you've posted. They are a less expensive line and are carried by a few PS vendors. If you are on a budget, IDJ carries this line and they have been fabulous for many PSers in combining a gorgeous diamond w a beautiful setting, all within the range you determine you want to spend.

But that ERD shown above --- its kind of YUMMY, too!!

I'm also in Canada and I have bought from the US and had items shipped here. They cover the cost of the shipping and you are given a tracking number via UPS or Fedex (whatever the vendor uses) and then you have to pay duty at the border. Its usually HST/ GST. I'm in Ontario so its 13% HST. The courier company also charges a handling/processing fee of anywhere from $10 - $35.

Re: Should I buy this Tacori setting? Seems kind of pricey..

I am also in Ontario, so it seems like it really evens to the same as buying local.

Well, compare prices, service, knowledge and quality before committing to anything. I had a *VERY BAD* experience w a local B&M in my city, and regret that whole event. They did not deliver what they had promised but I did manage to get a full refund, so I guess the positive was that t became a great learning opportunity... :?

Even with the Cdn/US $$ exchange and paying duty, I still find the prices are better stateside... and I prefer shopping w trusted PS vetted vendors who are aware of the nuances of dealing with us diamond crazed buyers!!

Good luck with your purchase - where ever you end up buying from.
