Should I buy this SI2 diamond?

I love a ring that fits a cushion cut diamond but the diamond has to be at least 1.70 carats and for what I can afford the stone is an SI2. I emailed them about the stone and this is what they said:

"We have spoken to the diamond cutter and have confirmed that this diamond is available and 100% eye clean. The cutter informed me that there is a small pinpoint in the table but it is not visible to the naked eye. There is also a small black inclusion when viewed from the pavilion but that is also not visible to the naked eye. In all, the diamond cutter described the diamond as a near high SI1 and a very beautiful diamond."

It is a cushion modified brilliant cut (very good), J color, 1.71 carats. Price is $6186. They said they were unable to provide photos of the stone though. I'm attaching a link to the diamond, once you get to the page there is a link to "View Certificate" and the GIA report is attached to that. Any feedback you have would be really helpful!! Thank you :)

It's impossible to tell from the GIA report whether this diamond is eye-clean. The plot diagram is a 2-D view so it is totally different when viewing the diamond with your own eyes.

Does the jeweler has a return policy? If the return policy is good, you can get him to ship the diamond to you, get it appraised by an independent appraiser in your area and see if you love the diamond. Please do this before setting the stone, as it is difficult for an appraiser to properly inspect the diamond if it has been set.

I agree they are good about returning items, I have done so previously, and cushions are such a personal preference on cut etc. I think your best bet would be having it shipped and viewing the stone for yourself :appl:

I would not buy a fancy cut without images. There is just way too much variation in the appearance of the diamonds, and you cannot tell by the plot diagram or table/depth percentages what the diamond will looks like.

You need a picture first before you go to the time and expense of having it shipped to you. Anything but a round has to be seen in a picture before considering it seriously.

Sorry throwing all this stuff at you, but I actually found a cushion on JA that looks like a really nice stone. It is a K color but it is VSI clarity and there are a lot of gals on here that have antique cut stones with lower color and they look great. I would think with the clarity difference that this one might be a better choice :twirl:

if you go to JA you can see the different appearances that cushions have!

What size do you wear? The reason I ask is because if you have small hands, then maybe you can afford to go down in size and go higher in quality?

Thank you all for your feedback!! The ring will be around a size 6...This is the setting that I liked http://www.adiamor.com/R-1385-R2839-1.htm.. The reason that the stone has to be 1.70 carat or larger is because of the pave around the center stone. I wouldn't mind going smaller with better quality but when I emailed them they said because of the pave they can't make the ring with a smaller center stone. I agree that I would like to see a picture first -- trying to weigh the pros and cons. I don't like any of the pave settings on James Allen and I really love this setting. I've heard that you should have the stone set by the jeweler that provides the ring. It is about $1000 for a similar stone that is VS2 stone from this jeweler http://www.adiamor.com/D-12286680.htm....trying to figure out if I can afford that. I understand that there is a lot of variation among fancy cut stones. I'm going to email again or call and see if they can send a picture...if they want to make a sale then they should want to make the customer happy.

Farmer gal...this is a really beautiful stone http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/K-VS1-Premium-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1357293.asp I'm just wondering which is a more important factor, color or clarity for a cushion stone? I've read that the color is important and I've seen some SI2 stones that are still beautiful, but I know you can't tell without a picture. What if I bought the setting from Adiamor and got the stone from James Allen?? Any suggestions on that??

Either one of the website will be willing to set the ring for you, but since you didn't buy both from the same website you'd have to pay for the setting fee.

If you look around on this website there are a lot of gals that have antique cuts that are even lower in color than K. Here is one thread example with lower colors. To me it looks like a gorgeous stone, and if I had to choose between a J SI2, or this K VSI I personally would choose the K. Now as far as ordering from two different companies I pretty sure you can order the setting from adiamor with the diamond measurements from JA. I would first order the stone and see how you like it, then I would order the setting if it's a go. Then you will probably have to get it set locally, but it shouldn't be a hard task for them to set since it would already be made to fit. Another note on the color I think set in a halo it would be just gorgeous but to each their own :appl:

I really think you should buy the diamond from a vendor who can provide images and other information. It is putting the cart before the horse to let the setting determine the size diamond you buy, and the vendor, IMHO.

you could probably find a similar setting elsewhere that could be customized to whatever center stone you choose? with a halo setting you want it to fit the stone properly
