* * * After listening to the suggestions, and thinking about this, I have started thinking about other possibilities that have nothing to do with my wedding ring. These include new rings for a different hand/finger:

  • my birthstone (aquamarine, but they are so light, that I am not sold on this idea)
  • mother's ring (but I have five kids and 3 are triplets, so can't figure out how to make that look right - 3 amethyst, 1 peridot, 1 sapphire)
  • just a ring I like
Here's an online catalog devoted to mother's rings. I didn't see any unusually creative settings & heaven only knows what their colored gems look like in real life, but there's certainly an array of 5-stone styles that might serve as a springboard for your own project designing:

One caution: both amethyst and peridot stones can chip and/or get "scuffed up" fairly readily, so better off in occasional wear rings (or a pendant or earrings) rather than a ring you'd like to wear daily/frequently.

Aquamarines will generally hold up better, altho' there seem to be a paucity of them nowadays in a nice color & without a full-on window, even in higher price ranges than I'm inclined to pay for an aquamarine. But it looks as if sherryberrybear has just found one that pleases her and her budget:

Still, a ring that appeals to you for non-symbolic reasons frees you up to expand the parameters of your search :))

This is exactly the comment that suddenly made me feel like I should be ashamed of my ring and my purchase. It was the way it was worded that made me feel down and why I wasn't sure about posting any more. Knowledge is power, yes, but when it is surrounding something as sentimental and hard-earned as my ring.....well, yeah, having it called flat didn't sit well.

Op said herself she didn't think of it being heat treated (and I assume treated at all). Knowledge is power and now the op is aware of these treatments. Whether she accepts it or not she has a right to the knowledge... and I feel everyone here contributed knowledge (and not unkindly). Not everyone will sugarcoat everything.

In your original post you said her blue diamonds looked "flat" that surrounded her sapphire. I think that comment was unkind.

I decided to post a new thread to ask about mother's rings/family rings because I have questions about that.

Kellard, I'm sorry I made you feel that way (*big Internet hug*).

Now this is either really funny... or really stupid. I'll go with the latter :wall:

This is the sapphire ring I was talking about. And those side sapphires as I've worked out now, I thought you were referring to as diamonds and they absolutely do not come across as diamonds do! Hence my flat observation and suggestion of just using sapphires as... that's what sapphires look like (which now I know they are...duh me)!

I really was just trying to save you some money, when I mistakenly thought those sapphires were diamonds. Now that I see the actual light blue diamonds in your other sapphire ring, in a halo around the main stone.... they are sparkly!!! No flatness coming from there!

Again, sorry my comment that wasn't even based on the correct ring made you feel bad, please don't because your ring is gorgeous! Please don't let anyone, ever, make you feel ashamed of something this important...

Okay, that clears that up. The sapphire ring you were referring to in the photo is actually not my favorite in design/style/etc., but it was also willed to me by my grandmother, so I wear it all the time. One of the side stones came out though, probably because I had it sized down to fit that finger. I would switch and wear it on my other hand, but apparently that finger is a little larger!
