should a chipped girdle prevent certain settings?

Sent my diamond out to be put in a custome bezel setting. The vendor notified me they found a small chip in the girlde and wanted to know if I still wanted to proceed. Is there any reason I shouldn''t? (asked them that, but have not heard back as it was late friday when I sent the email). I''m thinking the bezel is def. safer and will protect the girdle, but can setting it with a chip be risky?

thx!!

A bezel might offer more protection yes, but I would definitely want more info on this chip before doing anything from an expert, can the vendor arrange for the stone to be sent to an independant appraiser for an inspection before proceeding? How large is the chip, can it be seen with the naked eye etc? Which vendor has the diamond and discovered this? What size, shape and clarity grade is the diamond?

thank you for the quick reply!

it is at Whiteflash. I didn't notice the chip before I sent it in, so I'm going to say it is not visible with the naked eye. I'm guessing it was on or under one of the prongs (was in a 6 prong setting). I'm also guessing that they would have said "therefore, we do not recommend the setting" or something like that if they thought it was not a good idea, do you think?

It is certified as a VS2 (1.1ct) but they also said it is likely a SI1. (because of this chip? maybe?) ETA: round brilliant.

If the chip is small you could have it repaired. The cutter would put a small extra facet. This will help prevent further damage. If it not significant, you could have them hide it under a prong.

Ok in that case I would ask WF to clarify concerning this chip and whether you might want them to send it to an appraiser for a thorough evaluation before proceeding to see what the best course of action is, see what they suggest.

The supplier is probably just reporting what they found when they took the stone out of the setting. They don''t want you to find the chip after the new ring is finished and have you think they chipped it.

that''s what I''m hoping! i''m thinking whiteflash is experienced and reputable enough that they would have clearly advised me to not continue if it was something other than just a "FYI" notification.

I agree.

Definitely check with them, I know I would want as much info as possible concerning this chip before deciding anything, WF will be honest with you as to what to do next. It could be the chip is insignificant and they can proceed without a problem or the diamond might need careful evaluation by an independant party concerning this chip but do speak with them at the earliest opportunity.

thank you!
