Yeah I have a husband who is not so good at picking out gifts. I do feel he has gotten better, or maybe just doesn't buy me as many spontaneous presents. The first piece of real jewelry he bought for me was beautiful and just my style, which ended up being blind luck because he brought his sister with him and she has good taste. But if he is on his own he has many time bought me jewelry, like big heavy bead earrings, and most recently a bead necklace that he liked because "it looked like squished worms" (ok there is an inside joke there, but do I really want to WEAR a necklace that looks like that? No). One time when he bought me something like that, again a pair of huge crafty earrings. I didn't want to be mean but said, "Honey, have you ever seen me wear a piece of jewelry that looks similar to this?" "No" "Does it look like something I would wear, my style?" "No, but I just thought it looked cool."
I guess our agreement now is that we can buy each other spontaneous gifts, but nothing that is expensive. And now that we have kids, we pretty much get each other token gifts or take each other out for occasions instead.
Also, becuase I was the "person who liked jewelry" I would get lots of random jewelry gifts, particularly from my sister, that were not my taste at all. And I'd feel bad because often they were not necessarily cheap, either and they would just sit in the box. So finally I told her, "please, no more jewelry gifts." She still breaks down and gets stuff, but at least it's not to the same level it once was.
I still don't understand the concept of people who don't like jewelry, don't see the point, buying jewelry for people who actually like and enjoy it. It's like someone who doesn't drive buying a car for someone who is a huge gearhead.
