She wanted an X but I got her a Y instead

Yeah I have a husband who is not so good at picking out gifts. I do feel he has gotten better, or maybe just doesn't buy me as many spontaneous presents. The first piece of real jewelry he bought for me was beautiful and just my style, which ended up being blind luck because he brought his sister with him and she has good taste. But if he is on his own he has many time bought me jewelry, like big heavy bead earrings, and most recently a bead necklace that he liked because "it looked like squished worms" (ok there is an inside joke there, but do I really want to WEAR a necklace that looks like that? No). One time when he bought me something like that, again a pair of huge crafty earrings. I didn't want to be mean but said, "Honey, have you ever seen me wear a piece of jewelry that looks similar to this?" "No" "Does it look like something I would wear, my style?" "No, but I just thought it looked cool."

I guess our agreement now is that we can buy each other spontaneous gifts, but nothing that is expensive. And now that we have kids, we pretty much get each other token gifts or take each other out for occasions instead.

Also, becuase I was the "person who liked jewelry" I would get lots of random jewelry gifts, particularly from my sister, that were not my taste at all. And I'd feel bad because often they were not necessarily cheap, either and they would just sit in the box. So finally I told her, "please, no more jewelry gifts." She still breaks down and gets stuff, but at least it's not to the same level it once was.
I still don't understand the concept of people who don't like jewelry, don't see the point, buying jewelry for people who actually like and enjoy it. It's like someone who doesn't drive buying a car for someone who is a huge gearhead.

I viewed up to page 4 of the "ugly jewels" thread posted above, and then became so depressed that I couldn't go on.

I think you guys nailed it with some guys being clueless and some guys being controlling. I can understand a guy being clueless in a jewelry store. I picture him walking into the store with the same kind of attitude that causes him to refuse to ask directions no matter how lost he his.

My ex (who was both controlling and passive aggressive) took me e-ring shopping so that turned out okay, although he did bring up how much my ring cost for a full two years later. He also bought me a deer rifle for Christmas one year (actually the last year of our marriage) and then got mad at me because I didn't want to freeze my butt off sitting in a deer blind. Trust me, I don't look like the outdoorsy type.

My new man is of the clueless type (but not the least bit controlling) so I'm very specific with him. Before Valentine's day I expressed my desire for an antique camphor glass necklace and showed him how to access my wish list on ebay. I didn't get the necklace for Valentine's Day but I did get one for an early mother's day present and I wear it constantly.

That zazzy pendant is going to give me nightmares and, oy that dolphin ring.

Whenever I give advice on an e-ring purchase, I make it as clear as possible that the guy should buy what his GF wants. That's the best marital advice I can possibly give.

BTW - During the divorce settlement I was able to prove that the gun was a gift and not part of the settlement because he gave it to me in a pink camo case and I had pictures of it under the tree. Yup, he wanted "his" gun back. {rant over}

*CIRCE* Yeah, I figure I'll layer it with the cameo he got me for Valentine's Day.

NO I AM NOT KIDDING.[/quote]

At least Darth Vader is cute and funny at the same time. A few years ago I sent my husband to one of my favourite antique stores told him either earrings or a pendant nothing too expensive. Christmas morning imagine my delight (yes that is sarcasm) when I opened a yellow gold ying and yang necklace in brushed metal with a sort of look like it had been rubbed over with steel wool. Each side made two pendants and it had a very tiny diamond set in each one. The whole thing is larger than a penny in size so each piece is huge and not delicate at all....

Apparently it wasn't cheap and he thought I would love it. I actually couldn't believe they had something that ugly and it IS truly butt ugly in that shop or I would have never had sent him there. :? It's like the man has a homing beacon to find the most awful piece in the whole shop that he then gets ripped off and pays a fortune for it. I actually asked him would he wear the other side and he said no but he thought I would like it. I was sitting there thinking O.K, so even he wouldn't wear it.... I think it's at the bottom of some boxes in the shed somewhere buried, but if I ever find it you will all get the biggest laugh ever. It's right up there with some of the items in that ugly thread!!!!

A few years ago my husband bought me one of those pendants shaped like a flip-flop, I can't remember the name of the company - it's yellow gold (which I really don't wear) with tiny diamonds, so probably not cheap...he said he bought it for me because I like to wear flip-flops! Um yeah, but not necessarily around my neck! Sweet of him, and it's cute but just not me. I feel bad, but I just really don't want to wear it.

I have to say Circe, your husband's pendant choices are in a class of their own! :D Your dh sounds so sweet, and he truly meant well! (as did mine I guess!)

Hey I got one of those flip flop pendants too! Unfortunately, I think I bought it for myself. Mine has blue enamel and sapphires. At the time I thought it was cute and summery looking. I have never worn it one time!!!!!

oh my goddddddd I can so imagine my husband doing something like that. He LOVES humongous unwieldy jade pieces. He's always shocked by how expensive real, high-quality jade is... he has lusted over 40k jade necklaces in shops before... like a five inch piece of jade on a 15mm bead strand. As if my tiny frame could even support such a necklace. I am terrified that one day he will actually buy something like that. If you put him in a shop that only has more traditional things, he likes simple, modern pieces like u-prong eternities, but if there is any jade, he'll gravitate toward the biggest, most gaudy piece and get all misty-eyed over it. I guess it's fortunate that they're so expensive, because if they were just a couple thousand dollars I could very well be the proud owner of a necklace as big as my torso.

Lol luv2psarkle! Yeah, when I opened the box I thought "ok, this is kinda cute and fun for the summer" and I wore it a few times and just never reached for it again! It is cute, and I hope I haven't offended anyone who owns one, it just really isn't my style and the reason my husband bought it for me is sort of wacky (but sweet at the same time  )

Lovebug, actually it would make a cute bracelet! I've also thought about plating it.

This thread has made me laugh and nod in agreement so much! Love it.

My husband always tells me: Men are not mindreaders, so don't even hint, spell it out and say exactly what you want.

After reading this thread, I've come to appreciate my husband so much more, because I love everything he gets for me, because i send him wish lists....the element of surprise is the timing, for eg. I got my 10 year upgrade 4 months before my anniversary, he just woke up one Saturday, and told me to get ready to pick out my new ring! Very exciting still, even though we already agreed on budget etc.
