Well, it’s been a journey.
From being found in an old cardboard box, complete with desiccated bugs, at a deceased estate auction to disappearing for a while, presumed lost, to taking up residence, uncomfortably, in a preloved setting cos I’m a value add gal to a final tweak to make her look better.
With her weird shape obviously cut to maximise carat weight and a couple of nicks to her table (to this day I still shudder when I remember my enthusiasm shaking the rusted shut tin that held her, a sister, other relatives and many friends) she isn’t exactly a beauty queen but she has been a surprise, a shock, a sadness, a bit of a disappointment and finally a treasure of mine.

Oh gosh finally a Christmas miracle, you got her just in time for the holidays. Despite everything she's been through, her beauty still shines through. Love the how it all came together. Your ring is beautiful ❤️

She's a beauty queen to me! Absolutely stunning ring.

She is a beaut, what a journey!!! Love the setting too.

Absolutely gorgeous! Is this a ruby or a spinel??

Beautiful ring with such a vibrant stone. What a great Christmas gift!

Bron why has she been a shock and sadness to you? Vintage rubies like her are lovely, I too got my own collection and quite a romantic story behind them like you too. Ruby sisters unite❣️❤️

Well, under magnification, all is not as it seems and thankfully I checked after the Art deco watch disaster and this too will be going back.
The ruby, removed to add the new wee diamonds, is basically not in the setting.

Holy hell, it might be time to switch benches! That is a massive screw up on their part, especially with such an expensive stone.

I have to agree with @Lentibulariaceae

Please see about another bench. The gaps and carelessness (not proper setter work here).

This makes me nervous for you. There have even been stories on PS of suspected switching out rare stones even at trusted jewelers, or losing stones in transit.

Your stone is so special it makes my jaw drop. You can see from the side view how special your ruby is. That color and the microfine inclusions - just incredible.

I’ve once been given the privilege of watching a setter in action. Insist on an experienced setter? I wonder if you could ask to be there and bring the ring to and from. Etc.

Good luck. I love the new look of this setting btw. Your ring is spectacular.

Benches get busy in the leadup to Christmas. I was once advised to leave setting an emerald until after Christmas. Maybe, in the rush, your jobs were given to an apprentice or sent to an 'overflow' bench. Of course, this is in no way an excuse - they should have been inspected, sent back and re-done. But it may be an explanation.

ETA: That's a fabulous stone with an amazing story. The colour and glow are my idea of what a ruby should look like. It's also why I will probably never own a faceted ruby. I want one like that, and it's not gonna happen...

Yeah, as I mentioned in my other post, the Art Deco watch saga, I have been with this jeweller over 20 years and we are talking dozens of jobs and many, many thousands of dollars work. Such is my trust I don’t even ask for a quotation on work, I trust him to do a good job at a fair price.
I’m assuming he is using a new bench or his bench has different/ new people working.
I can’t believe that no one looked at it under magnification during or after the setting process. I mean, seriously this is really bad. It has essentially 1 prong holding the ruby. A simple snag on clothing or unintentional bump to the setting and the ruby would be lost. Not only is it a valuable gem, I could never replace it. I have insurance for theft from home but not loss outside the home.
I know what has happened, the ruby is an odd shape, it’s not a true oval it’s slightly fatter at one end and with a slight curve difference. They have reset the ruby the “other way around” and none of the prongs line up properly.
It will be an interesting conversion I’ll be having.
