The most common problem with shallow cushions is obstruction issues.
In other words they are dark when viewed up close but can look good at a distance.
There are some "tricks" a cutter can use such as smaller mains(David's example) or a huge culet(Yoram's cushion example) but eventually the laws of physics can't be beat.
