Hi everyone!

I''ve been looking online for the right ring to go with the diamond I found, but so far haven''t had any luck.
Does anyone know where I can look for settings that are unqiue/unusual? I''d really like something that''s ''off the beaten path''
and expresses my individuality and uniqueness.

On the flip side, I don''t really want to spend more on the setting than I did for the diamond!

Any and all suggestions would be WONDERFUL!!

thanks!

Are you buying the setting for yourself or for someone else?

If you are buying it for yourself, that''s great! Do you like more traditional or modern unique?

But if you are buying it for someone else, I advise you to get them to show you several pictures of settings THEY like. Express your individuality and uniqueness in your own things, and let the one wearing the ring enjoy what they love! (It''s not necessarily the same as we have seen here over and over again with VERY disappointed girls who received "surprise" e-rings!)

Hi!
I''m actually buying it with my husband for me - when we were engaged, we couldn''t afford a diamond and I have a beautiful celtic knot ring that was my engagement ring - but now, we''re lucky enough to be able to afford the diamond I''ve always wanted and so I want to find a great setting to go with it.

I''m actually wavering - I love the antique style settings, but find that a lot of them feel really ''busy'' to me - and I don''t care for that, so I''m thinking more modern unique might be the way to go.

Thanks!

I would page through the countless rings in the Show me the ring forum. Have you considered going custom? I finally did this when I could find nothing I loved.

This is a hard one... with so little to go on.

How classic does the personal choice have to be? E.g. I am a bit partial to tension settings and Titanium - would that be too far off the beaten track?

THIS may be at the other end - a very sage claw setting, with quite a bit of personal detail.

You might want to check out these guys:

Furthers, David Keeling, Jewelsmith... Green Lake Jewelry, Ron Davidson,

Hope something turn out good for you - at least for a clue if not just the right thing.

Thanks for the links! I''ll give them a peek and see what I can see!

I love tension settings - they''re so clean and original....but I haven''t seen one yet that will work with an emerald cut diamond - have you?

I chose an emerald cut because both my husband and I love the clean lines and simple elegance the cut provides.

So far, I can honestly say, I haven''t found anything that I just love - I did find a couple that I said "oh! that''s nice" but I''m waiting for the "WOW" to kick in - does that make sense? The jeweler I''m working with said they can make anything I like, but how can I ask them to make something when I''ve no idea what I want...grr..I thought the diamond search was the hard part.

ok, i think i''ve fallen in love....

opinions?

I really like that setting, so simple and elegant. Very nice.

As far as tension settings with emerald cuts, it can be done and look nice. This thread has pictures of ECs and Asschers set in tension settings.

You could do one with the EC set east-west.

Hi F0rbidden,
That''s a lovely ring you found! May I ask who makes it?

Forbidden, it''s beautiful!

this is my 4th try to post!! LOL!!

ok, the setting is from Green Lake Jewelry, the link provided by valeria (scroll up!)
thank you Valeria!!

they had so many really lovely and unusual things it was hard to decide on just one!!
They have the setting only in platinum, which starts at $1600.00. that''s more than i want to spend
on my setting, but at least with this I have a starting point!

not only do i love it, my husband is impressed with how clean and simple and elegant it is - of course, when i do get it, it will have an emerald cut diamond in it, making it even more elegant, imho!

i CAN''T WAIT!! woohoo!

That is a very nice setting by Green Lake - did you contact them directly? After reading through their site I was under the impression they can use any number of metals, but that one may be preferred due to the nature of the design. Perhaps a WG would be less expensive?

I haven''t contacted them yet - but I will!!
I believe the wg will end up being less than 1/2, based on information i found on a similar design at a local store...so i''m hoping that is what this one will be, too, because it''s REALLY perfect!!

I have an update to the search.
I have two sets of prices on this ring, which everyone in my family agrees is a keeper (unless, of course, i fall for something else in the store on Sunday! LOL!)

the store says they will make a ring for me for $650 in 18kWG, or $1200 in platinum
the designer says they will make this exact ring for me for $1800 for 18kWG or $2050 in platinum

my question is this- why would the prices be so significantly different?

Are you referring to the Green Lake ring?

Differences in pricing can be due to a lot of factors - sometimes all you are paying for is the designer''s name, but more often than not you are getting what you pay for. I am always skeptical of low estimates given to me when discussing reproducing a designer''s setting. Keep in mind the store can''t make an EXACT copy anyway.

I''d ask to see some examples of other pieces the store has made - the quality of their workmanship should be evident. Also consider the alloys that would be used, the experience of the jeweler recreating it, etc as platinum and WG are very different beasts, from what I understand.

Green Lake gives the impression on their site of being very meticulous and particular about quality control, their use of CAD''s, waxes for you to approve or not, they seem to be willing to work at it until it''s perfect for you, etc. Ask if your local place will provide the same services / level of detail and quality control.

The designer prices are too high for that setting with no diamonds. If you look, you''ll see plenty similar to that for much less.

Here is one with side diamonds from WF ($1995. including side diamonds) just to give you an example, not exactly like this, but on the same order:
