Setting width for small hands - Is this too bulky?

For my taste, I would find that setting too busy for a size 4.5. There is a lot going on with the side stones, metal bars and pave down the side. I wonder how much of it will be visible since her finger is so small. Has she already tried on something similar and loves the look? If so, then no problem. A 1.25 ct stone looks substantial on a 4.5 finger. Maybe someone can post a photo of their 4.5 finger so you can see how much space there is on each side sides of the stone. As far a width goes it couldn't be any thinner with side stones.

I really think it is a personal choice. I have VERY small hands and have had rings from 1.5 to 6 mm. AND I like to stack things.

I don't think it would be to wide. It is a very pretty setting. The only thing you may want to think about is will she plan on wearing a wedding band with it. Are you thinking of doing the matching band? I would be ok with this width of the two together but I like alot of bling. I want finger presence.

I don't know if that helps
GOOD LUCK

My ring size is about the same (I measure at 4.25 but due to hand damage I prefer to wear them a bit more loose) and I wouldn't say that 3mm is too wide at all. Even if she did wear a matching 3mm band.

I used to wear a matched set that was 6mm thick combined. Now I am in the process of resetting my stone into a bezel and hope to have 3 2mm bands that I can wear. That never overwhelms my hand and my fingers are not very long.

If this is what she seems to like, then I would go for it. 3mm isn't dainty but it isn't wide IMO.

I have a ring size 4.5 and Chiquitapet's ring is the whole reason I thought I could do a 1.25 stone- it looks incredibly substantial on her finger and it's a simple 6 prong band:

Edited just to ask- what kind of jewelry does she wear? I wear very thin rings and small studs so a big ring would have been out of place and over-taken my finger. If she wears thicker jewelry then go for it- only you know her best!

I would agree. The daintier bands are hot now but this is just fine - just a loootttt of bling on her tiny fingers, which I don't think she'll mind!!

Its a surprise proposal so she hasnt had any input. she doesnt wear rings very often and if she does its something small. I see what everyone is saying about keeping the wedding band in mind as well. Maybe I should find something thinner with a halo?

I don't think you need to halo the diamond. Are you just looking for some additional bling besides the center stone? Either a setting like the one Gypsy posted without the 3-sided pave, or maybe just a setting with sidestones OR a 3-stone setting (not both) would not overwhelm her finger.

Although, if she usually wears pretty basic jewelry pieces, even when dressing up, I would just go with a solitaire since she can stack so many different types of wedding bands. If she decides likes it and wants more bling after the proposal, adding an eternity band or even TWO little 2mm diamond bands to wear one on each side of the ring would add some pizazz but give her options. Also, if you go with a simple, inexpensive solitaire, you could let her know that she can have the center stone put into any setting she chooses at a later date (if you are okay with that)! :naughty:

Well in this case, I would reconsider.

Yea you're probably right, the halo is probably a stretch. I do like the 3stone pave posted above, but im not sure I like the pear shaped stones as side stones.

Im so glad I posted, sometimes us guys go overboard without taking into the ladies hands.

I think a classic 2mm or 2.5mm solitaire setting stacked with an eternity ring is such a classic look:

Like this: http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/2mm-Knife-Edge-18k-White-Gold-Solitaire-Ring.html

With this: http://www.jamesallen.com/wedding-and-anniversary/Ladies-Eternity-Rings/ring/item_495-4939.asp or this: http://www.jamesallen.com/wedding-and-anniversary/Ladies-Eternity-Rings/ring/item_495-5224.asp

Or, if she decides her very generous center diamond is enough, she can get a plain band. And, if she decides she does like wearing more jewelry or wants to wear more jewelry as the years go by, you could always leave the option open to re-set her diamond in a setting of her choice, or different anniversary bands to go with the solitaire!

ETA: a simple setting lets the large rock be the star!

I like both of the french cut settings...either would show off a 1.2 stone nicely! I dont really care for the first setting you
posted. Like someone else said...just a lot going on.

Yea too much metal on that first one.... Really really glad everyone pointed that out before I made a big mistake!

I think its between the french cut and a solitare now.

Do you guys like the french cuts too? Again she isnt flashy at all but i think its pretty and still simple.

I definitely like that wedding combo.... Funny thing is I was set on the classic solitare and was gonna be exactly what everyone suggested and just let her pick out an upgrade later.

How about something like this

Too much bling? I def wouldnt want her to be uncomfortable wearing it in everyday settings.

Thanks again everyone:)

To OP - I do love this ring - and I'm a solitaire girl - I don't think it is too much bling, just enough to add extra sparkle, but still looks classic and elegant - and I think it would work with most wedding band styles.

My only concern with that ring is that the diamonds seem to go all around the band and that can making re-sizing a ring tricky - unless you are positive you have the right ring size for your GF, I might look further to see if you could find something similar but only 3/4 around the shank, or maybe stick with your default solitaire idea... Good luck - I know you'll see the "right" setting and it will all click together for you.

It's a very pretty setting, but it seems like it would be a lot of metal between her fingers. I like thinner bands myself, so that my fingers aren't all spread out because of a thick ring. Especially if she doesn't wear much jewelry. I would just get a simple solitaire setting for the surprise proposal, and let her pick out a setting that feels most comfortable to her later on.

This one is like the other french cut but the diamonds dont go all the way around

I like this one MUCH more than the first ring and think it will look good on her size finger and not be too much with a wedding band. You don't want to get the ring with diamonds all the way around because it would make it difficult to resize later if needed. But be sure you know the right ring size now, because it is not great to have to resize a ring with diamonds on the shank because it sometimes loosens the little stones.

Hi I thought my input could be useful here. I have been seriously looking for an engagement ring for the past 2 months. I wear a sz 5 so I also have pretty dainty hands. After researching very extensively both in store and online I have recently come to the conclusion that the James Allen french cut pave is perfect for small hands. I read many reviews about having all of those "stones" or metal between your fingers, and most women who have this ring say after the first week or two you don't even notice the added material between your fingers. Ultimately if you are looking for a dainty affordable yet stunning ring the french cut is a great choice. I tried on a similar ring from a store that I was in love with but was 9k and a representative from James Allen suggested this ring and its going to be better quality for around 7,300. Hope this helps.

This thread is 2 years old. :))

Chris it is a beautiful setting. My only comment would be for me I would prefer all diamonds bringing in a blue sapphire my make her feel limited to what she wears (although I know your engagment ring should have anything to do with your cloths. But If I wanted to add color to my wedding set I would do a blue sapphire micro pave band and leave the engagement ring all white.

I wear a 4.5 and my diamond is 1.21 with a 4mm cathedral and a 3mm wedding band.
