Im thinking of buying some loose diamonds for an eternity ring, hopefully with a couple left over for earrings/necklace. What are my setting options? I contacted IDJ (as am on a budget) and they said they wouldnt set stones that hadnt been bought from them, which is fair enough but im unsure where to go next! I saw that BGD do settings, but they are outside of my price range (I think, I dont have anything to compare against to see whats reasonable)

Any ideas of where else I could try or what my options are would be much appreciated, thank you.

Hi HollyDolly! :wavey:

Are you asking what options (styles) for settings or which benches may have less expensive settings? Is there any particular reason you'd want to buy loose stones instead of just getting them from the jeweler? Just curious.

FWIW, it may be difficult and time-consuming to source stones totally on your own that will match (have same size, cut, and color & clarity range)...

Which benches, once I have one i'll begin the style dilemmas! The diamonds have already been in a ring (not mine) and I would be buying them as one 'lot'

Ok, I understand now... If you don't mind me asking, what is your total budget (diamonds and all)?

The diamonds are separate, but I was hoping for around the $1000 mark for just the setting. If its significantly more than that I will have to keep hold of the diamonds for a while until I can spare more. (I shouldnt even be entertaining doing any of this tbh so I really want to keep the costs right down!). Having said that, if the cost of say, a VC band wasnt ridiculous then I would definitely consider going down that road!

Im really just looking for advice on benches that will set diamonds you didnt get from them in the first instance, once I have an idea of cost I can make some decisions.

Thanks though :)

Have you already purchased the ring (lot of diamonds)?

Yes, im only looking at where I can get them set now.

Sorry, I think the reason we were fishing for more information is that due to cost of the actual bench work, it might not necessarily be cheaper to bring your own stones to a project. Looks like you've already purchased the diamonds though...

Ok, well VC and SK are both incredible, but you'd have to get a quote from them for the price... I'm pretty sure Dimend Scaasi sets outside stones.

I'd go ahead and get a quote from VC and SK, since their work is spot on...

Ask the vendor for pics. They would be the best resource.

Dimend Scaasi will only set outside stones in their settings if you tell them you are from Pricescope.

Thanks Sonny Jane, I completely understand why you are asking. I think here in the UK it would cost approx £1000 so factoring the VAT when having the diamonds sent here plus the carat weight of the stones for the cost I would still be massively ahead even doing that. I was trying to keep the costs even lower by having them set in the US as in all my experience so far all jewellery/diamond based stuff works out significantly more cheaply.

Having said all that I wont have any idea of how much the bench work is going to be until I have some idea of who to contact so any recs would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What style setting?

The style is important to know first. If you just wanted something very simple, then it would be easier to find someone to set them and less expensive. If you wanted nice pave or a more complex design, then you would be more limited (as every bench does not do quality work in this area) and it would cost more.

Sorry my fault for not being clearer, definitely no pave or anything like that, it will be between the more traditional styles. Of the ones I've seen so far, my fave is the u prong (I think that's what it's called) and I like the shared prong ones too. I'm not that fussy really, I don't see much difference in the look of the settings when I see the threads on here do I suppose on that front I'm lucky in that I don't have that much of an eye for detail!
