I am thinking of upgrading my stone in clarity. My current stone is 9.67 x 9.73 x 6.00 and is set in an eight prong platinum solitaire that was made for a 9.7mm MRB. WF has a stone that is 9.53 x 9.58 x 5.92. Do y'all think it will work? I know that most solitaire settings have a bit of play, but does having 8 prongs reduce the tolerance?

TIA

@Gussie It’s not that big of a difference...so I think it may work...I hope some trade people will chime in to give you an opinion. What clarity do you have now? Can you see the inclusions..or it a mind clean thing?

Thanks! My current stone is S1, eye clean from the top view. Unfortunately , I saw an inclusion on a side view. :???: Is it enough to matter in the real world? Absolutely not. In the crazy PS world, yes I am bothered, lol.

@Gussie I get it! They grade from the top up and not from the side...so ask them to make sure the inclusion can’t be see from the side with your bump up in clarity...You could even get another SI1 that doesn’t have an inclusion that can be seen from the side. My daughter-in-law has a SI1 with a small black carbon spot under the table and you can’t see it at all without magnification...

Going from my own experience, I'm guessing this will be fine. But re the clarity....

I definitely hear you on this. I've just upgraded my sides (and should get my ring back this weekend) and have plans to upgrade the center from a VS2 to a VS1 next year. It's going to cost a lot, but I've come this far, I want the perfect (for me) ring. So I've decided to go for it.

I love your ring! And I think an up-tick in clarity would be well deserved. How are the other stats? Same color? Same cut proportions?

I'll be following this with interest!

ETA Just found the stone you're considering on WF. Very nice!

I love your Margot Solitaire! I hope I'm not thread jacking. Would you consider a new stone even if it wouldn't fit in your Margot Setting?

I heard from one vendor that a difference of.15 mm is the most they can accommodate. So according to that one, you'd be fine. Others might allow more, IDK.

I have heard this too, except that I heard going up 1.5mm is ok, going down isn't. I am going to make an appointment with wf for next week and see what Leon says.

Cool, I'll be curious to hear what they say!

Hola MrsB!!!! hope you are feeling great because girl you look marvleous (pix with your god chidren).. I know you were doing the change more for health reasons but you look beautiful, Inside and Out! :)..

That said I wanted to say I admire you upgrades and desires, maybe a going up one color (or down) doesn't seem like much, but it it makes me happy I would do it, like changing form yellow t white or plat.. I love that you are doing this for your gems, our jewelry is for US not others anyway when I started my love of diamonds at probably 2 or 3 years old, I loved the diamonds because of sparkly and color and was mesmerized by my mom's engagement (which I think was a transitional stone probaby I2 or I3 as there was a black inclusions right smack in the middle that I never noticed till I was 20 at least, then my mom lost it anyway)... so I like that you design and have made what YOU want.. I so think that is important with us gem lovers.

Have a great weekend! sending happy and healthy vibes to you!

Kate

I don't think it's just about the mms across wise, things like crown height also matter when you are setting a round stone. I know because I had a VC setting that went from a RB to an Old Cut, Victor had to remove the prongs and laser weld new ones on because the reach up and over the older cut was a greater distance than the RB, but they were similar mm wise.

But in theory if they are both RBs it's not a huge difference so it should work. Someone like David Klass is a wizard at making stones with bigger size differences than this fit perfectly into rings.

I think you should go for what you want, and I also think mind clean is important, one should have the ring that one wants, not settle. I settled on an I color for my ACA, I don't see any color, but maybe at some point I'll go back to my favorite a G! best of luck..

I would have erika's bench set it to get her prongs. This would also address any tweaking that needed to be done with the new stone to the prongs.

I emailed her yesterday to ask about tolerance but she hasn't responded.

That would have been my recommendation too - ask the maker! Hopefully she will respond or that Leon will be able to give you some good answers.

I shouldn’t think that would be a problem. You are talking about a really small difference distributed by 8 prongs. Going smaller might be different than the same amount larger though. The pavilion will be fine at least! Fingers crossed for you!

Leon thinks it will work!! I am going tomorrow to look at the stone and have Leon see the setting to be sure. Yay!!!
Exciting stuff! We will be waiting to hear all about it!

:wavey: Might you have your contact info on LT by chance? I checked your old preloved threads, but all links to LT are dead/gone.

I think I deleted it. I will put it back up now!

Email sent (directly vs. LT’s messaging); just an FYI in the event it goes to spam. :wavey:

Well, I passed on it. I have always been under the impression that it takes a 0.2mm difference for the human eye. I guess size is the one thing that I readily see because the 3.3 ct was visibly smaller than my 3.443 ct even though it was only about 0.12mm smaller. Ugh, this Texas girl just can't go down in size. I think that would be a regret I am not willing to trade for. I believe my fellow size whores will agree!

The good news is that there is another prospect in the pipeline!!

I don’t blame you for not going down in size if you could detect it.

And FINALLY you are cursed with a sensitive eye to something most others can’t see :lol-2:

It doesn't take much in size to see a difference I found. In print, it sounds very doable but in person not always. Good for you for not settling!

The pipeline is always an exciting place to be - can't wait to hear about it!

I’m sorry it didn’t work out @Gussie I think we PSers have an ‘eye anomaly’ where we can see more minute differences in size than the average consumer because we likely observe our diamonds far more closely, frequently, and with a far more critical eye than most people do. We just KNOW there is a gnat’s backside hair difference in size. I’m eager to see this pipeline candidate, and keeping my fingers crossed that it’s nothing short of perfection for you. :appl:

@Gussie did Erika eventually answer you on the setting tolerance? I just bought a preloved Margot and I’m a little intimidated to ask her if she would reset my stone into the setting. Just because I didn’t buy it from her.

I am so excited you got it! It is such a beautiful setting!

Unfortunately, I emailed her twice and never heard from her. Maybe you will have better luck!

Your setting is beautiful and one of my favs here on PS. What’s the history of the Margot setting. I’m not familiar.

@Gussie Thank you for your quick answer! Then I might not even try now I just need to find a bench that does this fine prong work.

@diamondsR4eVR It was first constructed by Erika Winters in 2015/2016 and IMO it’s one of the finest repro antique settings out there. @mol42 @yssie and @Gussie have had or still have diamonds set in this setting. All beautiful examples! I personally love the 8 delicate prongs and how it hugs the diamond and the sideview is just to die for.
