Well this is my first post here, i have been reading this forum on and off for a bit now learning and reading about diamonds, etc. Its a great resource!

Now here is my question with a little back story. I was about to buy a ring for my pending proposal (before the end of the year was my time limit!) and was getting ready to take the plunge in the next week or two. Well my grandmother passed away late last week and after the funeral my grandfather approached me and gave me her engagment ring that he got her 60 years ago, telling me that they wanted me to have it as I am the only male member of my family left (which makes me the only member of my family able to "give" a ring). They were married for 58 years as of 2 weeks ago and no doubt there is a lot of history to the ring, and a note of pride where in this day and age a marriage of 58 years seems so uncommon.

So thats the back story. The setting of the diamond is still the original and is worn away and i need to get a new setting. Its a 3/4 carat diamond and now I am left with making a decision that I wasnt prepared for. What kind of setting would highlight this diamond (i want it to be the centerpiece in the ring as it is very important to me and my grandfather), where can i go to maybe show a jewler the ring/diamond so i can get appropriate settings and choices (would any jewler have designs to chose from that I can work with, is it better for me to have an idea before i go to a jewler?). I am sure something would strike me if i saw a bunch of designs but I am unaware as to where to go to find something for the diamond. At this point I am not really leaning one way or the other on the choice of it being solitary, or maybe with others that can accentuate it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

First, I am sorry about your grandma...
As for a setting, if you want to get an idea of what is out there, Jared has a lot of different settings, a rather large selection. You may be able to find a setting cheaper elsewhere, but if you would like to get an idea of different looks, that may be a good place to start.

Check out Pearlmansjewelers.com. Bill has a great on-line selection of settings and you will be able to view a lot of different styles to get a good idea of what appeals to you.

I am sorry to hear about your grandma too, that''s sad.

I was just wondering if you know what cut the diamond is? Also I am assuming you want to do a setting in keeping with the age of the stone?

If you do, have a look at this site for ideas on more vintage style settings, faycullen.com. Also this one has some beautiful settings too... http://antiqueengagementrings.com/

Best of luck and keep us posted!

Sorry about your grandma, but how sweet that you will get to pass down such an important heirloom.

Definitely take a look at www.faycullen.com and www.antiqueengagementrings.com

My stone is an antique cut...which yours may be also, and I really liked a lot of the settings on those two sites in keeping with the age/nature of the stone.

well thank you everyone for your quick replies and condolences. I dont know the details of the stone yet, thats one thing i''d also like to take care of, as far as cut, only thing i can tell from the quick glance is its a round. I will take a closer look at it tonight. Thanks for the antique sites too, that definitely slipped my mind when thinking of settings for the stone, and would definitely fit it perfectly!

I also am sorry about your grandmother. Take a look at the pic in facetfire''s avatar and compare it to your g-ma''s ring - do you see that type of chunky checkerboard type of pattern in the ring? You may be the incredibly fortunate recipient of one of the older cuts such as a transitional cut or an OEC (old european cut) - they are beautiful!

Here is a link about them... http://www.diamondsourceva.com/Education/Shape/diamonds-shape-old-european-cut.asp

It is also possible it could be a transitional cut which was between the OEC and the modern round brilliant and looks very similar to the OEC.

i''ll have to see if i can take a picture, it appears to be similiar but the "table" (not sure if i am using the words correctly) is a bit larger. It looks like it could be inbetween the two.

Gotta read up on how to take a picture of it correctly now :)

thanks so much for everyones help!
