Hello lovely folks,

I recently got a platinum antique/vintage setting. I want to set my stone, but wondering how I should set it.
It’s an old illusion setting. These tend to have stone set pretty high, especially with smaller stones, like these:

I am thinking of setting the stone low, like this:

I am wondering, is that strange or maybe even a little bit wrong, as in that’s not how it was done then kinda way?
I love old jewelry and want to be respectful of the old ways.
Or maybe not as low, but still kinda high like below is better?

My stone is .88ct OEC. I don’t have the setting yet, so I can’t post pictures.
Please tell me what you think!

I like your medium height two-tone option the best - it’s elegant and proportional. Too high and you’ll be banging it into everything plus I always think the profile on those skyscraper ones look really odd... and you want a profile you enjoy! Please feel free to post pics of your OEC and the setting and then hand shots when they’re together btw! We love loads of pictures :appl:

+1.

The medium one still has the diamond set pretty high. I think that design could work with the prongs a little shorter. The very last picture still has the culet of the diamond above the average height of the shank, so it's not all that low.

Other antique settings that will give you some height but maybe not such height, are belcher setting (you either like them or you dont) and also 6 prong settings of a variety of types that look like crowns, tulips or petals. I would look at a few types of settings especially from the side before you make a decision.

Gah, the setting was too big. Back to square one.
Thank you for your input!!!

Boo, that's disappointing. Hope you find another setting you love soon!

Thanks, Anastasia!
