Setting choice: 18k vs Platinum

I am torn between 2 settings. One is a desinger piece (A. Jaffe) in white 18k gold, for $1990. Blue nile has the almost identical setting, non designer, in Platinum for $1200. My concerns are that 18k will be too soft, as well as the likely hood of turning yellow (although it is plated).

Should I save the 700 and go with BN? Any concerns about quality? The BN setting is 950 platinum. Also, if I go through BN on the setting it looks like I have to buy the stone through them as well, which are a little overpriced compared to other retailers.

Gold/white gold isn't an option for me bec of allergies, so I am going to say Plat, but I am biased in that favor anyway.

However, if you already have a diamond OR you are buying from a vendor often mentioned here, see if theyh ave one similar.
