Long time lurker but this is my first post so hope I've got it in the right place.

My SIL inherited a 5.1ct OEC diamond solitaire ring from my late MIL a number of years ago and has recently decided to sell it. Rather than let it go out of the family my DH is buying it from her but has said he doesn't mind if I want to get the diamond reset (currently in platinum but looks very dated, in an old fashioned way rather than a vintage way).

The clarity is ok, VS2/SI1, but it has been graded as M in colour. In all honesty, if we were going to invest in a diamond I would prefer a smaller carat size and less colour; my engagement ring and eternity band are both set with modest sized D colour diamonds. However, due to the family connection it has great sentimental value so I feel very privileged to be its new owner and also want to do it justice with a new setting.

I am looking for suggestions on how best to set it, and also are there any settings that might make it look whiter? I would also probably prefer a yellow gold band as most of my other jewellery is yellow gold (but not if this will accentuate the colour). This is the first time I have planned anything like this (my e-ring was chosen by DH) so I'm feeling rather nervous about getting it wrong.

Thanks so much for reading this far and any advice will be very much appreciated!

There is a website Jewels by EricaGrace and she has vintage style settings... a 5 carat stone doesn't really need any halo I would think.. I think the regulars in the know who will come will give you better places to look.. I know they say to set diamonds with a lower color in Yellow Gold! so you are in luck.. there are several beautiful 5 caraters on this site.. if you just search for 'show me your 5 carat" or something like that it will pop up!

If you have a pix upload it for everyone to see.. it must be stunning!!! congratulations!!!

Congrats - please share pictures! I really don't think there is much you can do to make a M look white but perhaps something that covers the side as the side shows more color than top down for OECs. However, there are many people who would love a M diamond at this size - would you consider selling it to someone who loves it just the way it is?

Hi,

Start by looking here;

Grace can design or modify something in any type of gold you want if you don't like any of their existing settings.

Adam at Old World Diamonds or ERD (Engagement rings Direct) could design you something.

Or if you want to splurge,

Victor just made me a lovely Deco 8 prong setting which looks like a genuine Antique and Acinom's French Cut side setting is pretty hard not to love as well;

Some M stones are less tinted face up than others, you will never get it looking like a D or even a G or a H regardless of the colour of the metal you choose. Learning to live with the colour is part of loving many Old Cuts. Mine is an "L" that faces like a "J" most of the time in platinum...

Thanks for all the replies and links, that gives me a good place to start my research - I think I'm a little bit scared of this rock!

I will post some pics as soon as I have the ring in my possession - my sister in law has had it in a safe since my mother in law passed away a number of years ago and she doesn't live locally so I'll have to wait a few weeks until I see her. I will probably wear it in the current setting for a while anyway while I get to know the diamond and ponder the setting - I am by no means grumbling about it being an M, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I'd ever own a diamond of this size! And its sentimental value to my DH far outweighs any monetary value we could place on it.

Will be back ASAP with some pictures, thanks for your help x

I really love Arkie's new setting and Acinom's too if you wanted platinum! There are some other gorgeous ones on that 5 ct thread, too. If you like yellow gold, I strongly advise using white metal for the head/prongs of the ring and yellow gold for the shank.

I'm glad you and your DH have decided to keep the stone in the family, what a lovely heirloom ::)

What style is your other jewellery? You mentioned that you generally wear smaller colourless diamonds, so for a stone that is the opposite of your "norm" I'd suggest a setting that's different from your "norm" too. Something you'll wear and enjoy, but that's clearly and deliberately a different flavour from your other pieces, so they don't try to compete (because let's be honest - if high colour is one of your priorities an M is always going to lose unless it's got something else buoying it! Like perhaps an unusual setting ::) )

Does it have to be a ring? A large stone like that would make for an impressive pendant, and it wouldn't always be in your direct line of sight so you wouldn't notice the colour as much IRL...
