I need help....but for now I''ll just try to keep it realted to my diamond (ha ha)

I am in the process of getting a new setting and band for my exisiting e-ring. I fell in love with a micro pave band at a local jeweler (she tends to carry mid to high end pieces). Anyway, she told me that the person who designed the setting that I adore is in NY -- someone named Kimberley (kimberley diamonds?). She further said that b/c the pieces were custom made, she would send my diamond to them, and they would complete the ring for me. Of course I would have my diamond "mapped out", insured, etc.

After meeting with another jeweler, this person told me that she would NEVER send her diamond out. As a result, I feel stuck because I truly adore the setting, but didn''t know if sending my diamond out was a red flag. An insight/info would be appreciated, as would anyone familiar with this designer.

Thanks in advance!!!

lots of things go into this choice... if you trust them is a big one, if you have it "mapped" as you said is another.... I''ve turned my diamond over to a jeweler so I don''t have mine - they need it for making the ring also because it''s an unusual size/shape but because it''s unusual I also feel pretty confident it couldn''t get switched on me. Soooo..... yeah sometimes you have to send your diamond in - particularly for setting, can''t do that remotely lol But it''s wise to work only with someone you trust and line up all of your eggs before you do so. What those eggs are exactly I''m not sure....

thanks for the info. I guess I was just wondering if this is just standard for some jewelers/designers, etc. She said they could do it in the store, but that since it is a custom piece, their comfort level would be to have the diamond sent directly to the designer. I just want to make sure I cover all the bases as I would be truly upset if my engagement diamond was lost, damaged, etc.

i wanted to add that honestly, i''d rather the designer set my stone. they do it all the time and know their settings the best. insure the stone and don''t worry, the chances of something happening are very, very slim. I''d be more worried about the local jeweler messing up the setting.

Many jewelers are not jewelers. Do you know what I mean?
They are merchants, often very good merchants, but they seldom are jewelers who can make wonderful jewelry.
To deal with this issue they buy from designers in New York, California, Europe and even Maine. As long as the store will assume the responsibility for your diamond, and you feel you can trust them, then if the diamond gets lost in transit they will have to replace it with another diamond of equal value. I know you may feel attached to your diamond. It may however be worth it to get the design you want to take this risk.

Absolutely..what she said.

wooooowwwwwwww --

thank you for sending along that thread. I just read it -- what a nightmare! I suppose that there does have to be a level of trust, and now understand why a jeweler would send a stone out to be set-- very helpful, thank you!
