I've been looking through threads and after all the recommendations on here, I decided to work with Brian Gavin. I have bought a diamond from their signature line because I have no doubts that their diamonds are of high quality. I'm just not getting the customer service everyone seems to be getting on here. Communication hasn't been really great and I can't call because I'm overseas and the time difference makes it really hard. Of the 5 questions I ask, I get a short response that usually answers 1 or 2 of what I asked. I have fallen in love with the Vatche Sisley setting which I have said from the start but they do not carry the setting. As a novice as I am, I asked if it was possible for them to make a custom setting for me that is similar (I realize now that it was a big no-no and I am not holding that against them). I feel like I have been jumping through hoops because they keep offering me different settings at first and when I turn them all down they FINALLY offered the idea that I buy from Vatche directly. I contact Vatche only to find out that they do not deal with buyers directly and that the jeweler should know to contact them. So now I have to wait for another response to figure out how to do this...if they are willing to contact Vatche and do the modifications I am requesting (changing the surprise diamonds to sapphires instead). This has gone on for what seems more than a week which in reality isn't really that long but it's driving me crazy. Sitting around for 24-48 hours for a 1-2 line response is probably contributing to my frustration as well. I just feel like it would be a lot easier if they were more prompt with responses...
I have contacted another company which I am absolutely in love with in terms of their service, they are really reputable as well and I feel like punching myself for not just buying a diamond from them to begin with but they are also located in Texas so I will be responsible for sales tax if I have Brian ship the diamond to them and the rest of the production done through them. From the start, they were really helpful and proactive with all my requests. A lot of the complications that Brian Gavin brought up with my requested modification was not an issue at all with them. A way to avoid the sales tax sounds really complicated and costly to me but it was a suggestion that the company gave me to avoid the taxes: Vatche can either set the diamond for you or ship it empty.
To avoid having to pay Texas sales tax, I would have Brian ship to Vatche, have Vatche set the diamond and send the complete ring back to them. I would be responsible for the outbound insurance on the diamond during delivery to me.
Should I stick it out with Brian Gavin...? Are they maybe just having computer issues? Should I pay the hefty sales tax and go with the other company? Another option is to find another reputable company that is not in Texas and finish the production of the ring with them...
