Lacking life is a dealbreaker because sparkle is what diamonds are for!
Yes I’d pass on that one too. Darn such a good price
She is gorgeous!! What a beautiful diamond! I imagine you have posted already about her? Going to look through your thread history.
I still want to see octopus! And your photos of the solitaire are way better than the salesperson’s were! I think you’re right to return both, but I have to say the the solitaire was not as bad as I expected to be after seeing the sales person‘s pictures.
As requested. The octopus OEC looks pretty white, and I think it’s fairly large, the bezel/setting does it no justice and it looks like it could be slightly larger than anticipated. I wanted to measure mm sizes but my digital calipers are dead.
The crown is gorgeously tall, and I think the cut is much better on this diamond than the solitaire. It’s really difficult to capture the brilliance of the diamond in my indoor nighttime lighting, it is more lively than the solitaire but the setting makes it look so dark.
The clarity though - I1/I2, there are a lot more dark inclusions, they are more dispersed and do interfere with the diamond’s brilliance. The inclusions are clearly visible without magnification. At least with the solitaire it was just one single freckle, I could have dealt with that if the cut had been good - but the clarity on this diamond was a deal breaker for me.
What do you all think?
Edit to add: the middle diamond had a HUGE white feather across the table and towards the girdle. Sparkled, white, but not good. The smallest diamond was just fine!
I emailed you the link for this and the full GIA with the numbers… I really struggled with sharing this because I really want this for a pendant, but I want you to have first dibs…
And now that you know you are ok with a warmer stone, she might be a little smaller than what you are on the hunt for, but omg, that tiny table and the faceting on this is to die for.
So keep me posted if you decide to pass on her!

Thank you so much for sending me this so I could check it out. It looks beautiful but I do think I want a little larger. When I go in person Thursday to see some diamonds to find out the smallest size tolerance and will definitely let you know. I also want you to get it if you absolutely love it.
Agree! The hunt continues! I’m going to be traveling the next couple weeks - Chicago, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle.
Any shops in those cities you’d all recommend? I am going to build a diamond itinerary along with hiking and galavanting, open to suggestions!
I've been wanting a large OEC for years. This diamond will be set into a RHR to symbolize an important work/life accomplishment. I want to tell you how big a deal this is for me but you'd have to know my whole life story and who has time for that lol.
I've been afraid to post because I know what I'm looking for is not going to be easy and didn't want you all to just laugh me right back out of here. I found some stones that were in my budget that gave me hope and seemed like reasonable contenders. I think it's doable, but I need your help!
I am looking for the largest OEC I can get for around $10k. I am not looking for perfection, in any parameter. I want the biggest possible diamond without compromising too much on cut. I don't mind shallow stones if they are still pretty. I ideally want to get as close to 9 mm as possible. I love OECs for their romantic broad flashes and pastel colors, but I also like Transitional/American Cut patterns. I prefer rounds but a lil wonk is fine too. Love character! I don't have strict requirements for puffy crowns or petals. Those elements are so beautiful and charming so I would love a stone with petals but it's not required.
I wonder if it’s best just to contact someone like
ritaontherocks or dolly to see what they can source?
A very good visit! I agree completely that 4 and 5 are the best cut, I would say both are very nice examples of their kind. I would also exclude 1-3 just based on those pictures and I’m glad to see your in person evaluation fit that too!
What’s the next visit planned?

Dropping in to pass on this website. I have no experience with them personally because I only recently discovered ERAGEMS. Tons of eye candy and a variety of OECs, although they are already set:

However, the one I'm drooling over is this OEC in an orange blossom setting, on eBay — and it's in your price range!
From the description:
"The ring weighs 3.5 grams, size 7, the center stone is a Natural 1.87 ct Old European Cut diamond, J in color, SI1 in clarity, Measuring 7.75-8.11x4.60 mm. Comes with GIA Diamond Certificate"

3 is my favorite, but that's bc i prefer transitional vs OEC patterns. I don't think it has the petal look, so if you want that I'd stick with one of the last 2
Bigger budget was the key although incidentally I found a couple of stones that did fit closer to the original budget - will be posting about those today or tomorrow! Thanks for the detailed report! It's really helpful for those of us still trying to learn too.
I didn't like 1 and 2 either. I agree 3 is a transitional, I would've liked to see another video of it. Dreamer, I wonder why you don't like that one?
4 would be a no for me because of the inclusion. I can't believe that got an SI2!
I don't think 5 is my favorite flavor, and it sounds like it wasn't the one for you either.
I can't wait to see what's next! I'll be keeping an eye out as well in case I come across anything. Bigger budget is more fun!
