Agree! The hunt continues! I’m going to be traveling the next couple weeks - Chicago, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle.

Any shops in those cities you’d all recommend? I am going to build a diamond itinerary along with hiking and galavanting, open to suggestions!

Starting a new thread for my girl while she's getting her new dress. Some of you might remember when I bought her on TRR. She was sold to me as a 2.7 K-L, VS2-SI1 in a 27 gram gold nugget setting. And she looked like this…



I had a lengthy thread going with many photos and comments. I had no knowledge of my own, just a strong desire for an old cut. So many helpful PS'rs chimed in. LavenderDragonfly named her Willy from “Free Willy”. Someone said her cut was “Chef’s Kiss”. Dreamer D said ‘You could look for a year and not find another stone cut that well’. I still want to see octopus! And your photos of the solitaire are way better than the salesperson’s were! I think you’re right to return both, but I have to say the the solitaire was not as bad as I expected to be after seeing the sales person‘s pictures.

As requested. The octopus OEC looks pretty white, and I think it’s fairly large, the bezel/setting does it no justice and it looks like it could be slightly larger than anticipated. I wanted to measure mm sizes but my digital calipers are dead.

The crown is gorgeously tall, and I think the cut is much better on this diamond than the solitaire. It’s really difficult to capture the brilliance of the diamond in my indoor nighttime lighting, it is more lively than the solitaire but the setting makes it look so dark.

The clarity though - I1/I2, there are a lot more dark inclusions, they are more dispersed and do interfere with the diamond’s brilliance. The inclusions are clearly visible without magnification. At least with the solitaire it was just one single freckle, I could have dealt with that if the cut had been good - but the clarity on this diamond was a deal breaker for me.

What do you all think?

Edit to add: the middle diamond had a HUGE white feather across the table and towards the girdle. Sparkled, white, but not good. The smallest diamond was just fine!

It's too bad neither of these were pleasant surprises, but I'm looking forward to the rest of your journey. The Ivy & Rose one is promising, as is the one lavender posted above!

Thank you so much for sending me this so I could check it out. It looks beautiful but I do think I want a little larger. When I go in person Thursday to see some diamonds to find out the smallest size tolerance and will definitely let you know. I also want you to get it if you absolutely love it.

Got to Lang’s in SF-prices will be high but you’ll be able to see a bunch of stones. In Seattle, Isadora’s looks interesting.

Also check out Mureta in SF. The owner is a gem and he has been known to cut people a deal.
