Hey all! I didn't want to threadjack the Halloweeeen thread, so I am starting a thread about scary movies for those interested. I have a pretty long list I can share. Every year through October I watch as many Scary Movies as I can fit in. I actually started in September this year. Here is a list of what I like, what I watch, what I want to watch.
House on Haunted Hill - I love the newer version, like love.
The Hills Have Eyes
Wrong Turn
The Devil's Rejects
Insidious
The Devil Within
The 9th Gate - Johnny Depp
Shutter Island - Twisty with Leo DiCaprio
The Grudge
The Ring
The Blair Witch Project
28 Days Later
Quarantine
The House at the End of the Street
The Shining
Silence of the Lambs
The whole line of the Hannibal Movies
Children of the Corn
Signs
The Sixth Sense
13 Ghosts
Dark Knight - Don't care who you are, The Joker is scary. Quite possibly the most terrifying villain ever.
Pet Cemetary
The Lady in Black - Daniel Radcliffe - pretty creepy moments
The Rite - With Sir Anthony Hopkins
Hitchcock - Alfred Hitchcock was a strange man and I find him eerie
The original Carrie
The Mothman Prophecies
Candyman
Hellraiser - freakkkyyyyy
Hocus Pocus - not as scary but a Halloween tradition
Village of the Damned
Poltergeist
Evil Dead was pretty good
Cabin in the Woods - so so
Sinister
The Exorcist
Sleepy Hollow
Friday the 13th
Interview with the Vampire - Chilling
Saw
The Amityville Horror
28 Weeks Later
Scream
Silent HIll
I know What you Did Last Summer
The Skeleton Key - Creepy
Resident Evil
Halloween
The Last Exorcism
Paranormal Activity - All of them, these FREAK me out. Don't play with the Devil.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The Craft
Devil
The Crazies
Saw II
Jaws
The Faculty
The Witches of Eastwick
From Hell- Another Johnny Depp about Jack the Ripper
The Omen
The Pact
Species
Intruders
The Wicker Man
Urban Legend
Cabin Fever
Nosferatu - One of the best
Shutter
Darkness Falls
The Order - Heath Ledger

Great list! Quite comprehensive. Although I confess I don't like the ones that are gory. Loved The Woman in Black too. Very atmospheric and creepy. And Nosferatu is so fun. I've seen it twice where a local university music professor has played the entire film's score live, on an organ. Great fun and the music was so integrated into the film on the fly, that sometimes you'd forget that it was being played live. :)

If you haven't seen Perfume, you need to add it to this list. It is not gory, but creepy with more than one absolutely shocking twist. I suspect you'll love it.

not scary [but along the same lines with zombies, bodies, ghosts, etc.] but definitely October/Halloween worthy:

Beetle Juice
Fido
Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
The World's End
eta:
Bubba Ho-Tep

Ooh, I'm gonna have to come back and add to this list too! But I wanted to agree that I don't like gore scary movies, I like suspense, plot twist and spirit scary movies. Or, as in MoZo's list, funny movies like Shaun of the Dead (loved that movie and it was full of over the top gore, lol). The one exception to the gore list for serious movies is World War Z. I LOVED this movie, because of the special effects and because of the suspense/surprise element...you knew there were zombies, you just didn't know what corner they would be around, so to speak. So that one is definitely on my list. I'll have to go look for others. Thanks for another great way to procrastinate for the day!

Crap! Every time I thought I had come up with one that was not on your list, I'd go back and see it there, darn it! You are very thorough, DF.

Okay, let's see. What about:

The Shining - great story; an oldie but goodie;

Signs - sorry that it only deals with extraterrestrials, but still scary;

The Village - good example of humanity's desire to be frightened;

Ju-on - might be the original foreign version of The Grudge?

The Thing - why we should never move to the Antartic;

The Descent - why we should never go spelunking;

Eden Lake - sometimes, the scariest thing is people;

Them - Foreign; another one in the there-is-nothing-scarier-than-people department;

Dead End - good escapism with humor thrown in;

Turistas - I know I said I didn't like gory (I would've liked it better without), but the premise is great. Again, people are scary.

The Orphanage - one of my all time favorites. A Spanish movie without gore, but suspenseful and sad.

Donnie Darko - strange and surreal, not sure I got it, but Jake Gyllenhaal when he is younger and a great song destined to be a hit...

And when it all gets too much, there's always:
Ghostbusters!

Ones on DF's list I loved:
The Exorcist
Insidious
The Ring
The Blair Witch Project
The Skeleton Key

I really liked the Orphanage too!!! It wasn't too scary that I couldn't watch though.

eta: I no longer watch scary movies! I do love the classics like the Omen, Rosemary's baby, the Bad Seed. and Psycho

I should see this one again! Mia Farrow is so young and innocent looking.

I love:

The Horde--a French zombie movie
Night of the Living Dead
Evil Dead
Evil Dead II this is one of my absolute faves
CHUD
Rec--a Spanish zombie/possession movie
Battle Royale
Ichi the Killer

I love love love to be scared. But I for whatever reason can't do the movies like The Ring-that dumb thing scared me for months. Tho, I don't scare nearly as easily as I did before I had kids. Now I CAN'T be scared b/c I have kids to worry about. When I watched The Ring I was 8 months pregnant w/London and spent the remaining month until she was born unable to sleep w/out lights on in the living room (b/c something might come out of the tv in the dark) and finding out that even with a belly that stuck out like nobody's business, I could still vault over JD into bed like Mary Lou Retton so I didn't have to walk around the bed in the dark to my side.

Movies w/people wearing masks, um no. We rented a movie a while ago, and I always forget what it was called.."based on a true story", about this newlywed couple and these people harassing them and then killing them. One of them had like a little girl mask on or something. Anyway, just the little tiny pictures on the back of the case and yeaaaaah no we didn't watch it.

That kind of stuff doesn't bother JD-if it's real people, or anything he can kill, he's fine. Ghosts, nope, won't be watching it.

I can't see scary/suspenseful things in the theater b/c I am very active and can't sit still, rocking back and forth on my knees, throwing my arms in the air, pulling my hair back and twisting it, making noises. We went to WWZ and luckily there wasn't a whole ton of people in there. I'm like OMG OMG I'm too old for this I can't handle it! And then JD leaning over and chattering his teeth at me like the zombies. bah.

But dangit it's just so fun I keep doing it anyway!

Don't forget, "Scary Movie"!

It's a comedy/spoof on Horror films.
It's hilarious and now streaming on Netflix.

... and actually I think there is not only one sequel, but four.

HI:

Not masks and axes scary, but creepy because it is possible....like The Shining: Dead Calm and Pacific Heights.

cheers--Sharon

I love indie horror flicks and when I find a good one it makes me so happy! I watched one recently called Inhuman Resources that had
me glued to my couch. Even my husband watched it and he hates scary movies. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1857842/?ref_=sr_1

A friend of mine made a zombie musical that's a lot of fun too if you want something kinda campy with a fun story http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1582270/?ref_=sr_1

I thought The Conjuring was pretty good too.

Great list, Dragonfly! I'm placing holds and the library for the movies I haven't yet seen. Thanks!

I'll add a few:

The Others
1408
Fright Night (original with Chris Sarandon - I even liked the sequel)

eta: Let Me In (and also the Swedish version Let The Right One In - the book is even better!!)

Here are some low-budget 80's flicks that left me permanently scarred:

The Unnameable
Demons
Xtro
Make Them Die Slowly

eta: and one that scarred me recently - Antichrist (by Lars Von Trier)

Thank you for this thread Dragonfly. I just love love love scary movies! Not gory but creepy and one that stays with you because it was so haunting (in a delicious way if that makes any sense) and psychologically disturbing. I loved some of these recs and some others I haven't yet seen so thanks for those. Here is my contribution (the ones I can remember so far).

The 1965 The (Butterfly) Collector with Samantha Eggar...there are other movies with this name so make sure you get this one. It is one of the creepiest and scariest movies I ever saw. Granted I saw it probably over 20 years ago but it has stayed with me and I highly recommend it. So scary and haunting and just wow.

The Innocents-I saw it a long time ago but I remember Deborah Kerr's performance was amazing and the movie was definitely creepy.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055018/

The 1988 foreign The Vanishing-make sure it is this version and not the remake. Haunting, creepy, disturbing. Loved it.
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1036630-vanishing/

and not sure if anyone has recommended this one yet but the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers...ooh creepy!

Wow, too weird as I just watched this two days ago! Creepy. And in light of recent events, almost a little too realistic...

One of the few movies that I have seen that I loved and regretted seeing all in one - can't say any more than that, but I *think* you know what I mean, Missy! Certain images I have never been able to get out of my mind...

Yes! To this day, if somebody is not acting normally, I always ask where the pod is...

Have you guys watched American Horror Story? How did I never know this existed??????

Hi Minou-that is a weird coincidence about The Collector. I saw it so long ago and I remember how creeped out I felt during and after watching it. Now I guess it is not as shocking. Sad commentary on life in general I guess. Oh, and I totally agree about The Vanishing. Some of those images just stay with you for a long time...
and for me, that is a hallmark of a good movie. Though not exactly relaxing or peaceful lol.

Dragonfly OMG! You are lucky to be able to first experience American Horror Story now. I loved it. Though I did not care for the second season. I just hope the 3rd season will be as good as the first or at least better than the 2nd. Enjoy!

Missy - Well if the first 10 mins of the first episode are any indicators....

hahaha Cabin in the Woods

We've seen that about 10 times. My husband LOVES that movie.

I'll have to go through this list as my older son is now into horror movies. It's hard to find horror/scary movies that are okay for pre-teens...

Not sure if these were mentioned, but a few are:

Dusk till Dawn
Army of Darkness

Both are scary/but silly, too... I don't like movies that have too much supernatural stuff...I use to love those kinds of movies, but now they give me chills...

The Others was mentioned...that movie is really cool and I've watched it a few times and my younger son watched it with me too and he liked it...wasn't technically scary compared to some of what's been listed.

And, of course, Alien is one of our favorites.

I LOVE this show. Watch seasons one and two if you haven't, but jump right in with season three as it just started back last week! (You probably know this, but it's a different story line each season you can start at any season, which is great).

Hmm, looks like I may have to give some of these series a try. :)) Full blown addiction, here I come!

Oh I watched Season one through last week and the weekend and am in the middle of season two! WOWZERS! Whoever writes this stuff has a twisty mind! The first season was crazy, very sixth sense style, and I would have lost my mind in that house! Second season is wild!! I like this kind of twisted stuff, it messes with my mind more than the traditional slash and kill or ghost story. I love how the same actors are integrated, and the one woman seems to stay with a lead each season!

Oh do give this a try minou...it is worth it! I haven't started season 3 yet but it's on my TIVO ready and waiting.
I think season 1 is on netflix and I really really really loved season 1. Scary! :errrr:

Yay Dragonfly-glad you are enjoying the show!

On Monday I watched part of Hellraiser III, and then House on Haunted Hill came on. That one remains one of my favorites.

Yes, it's a wild show - it's kind of all over the place and you never know quite what to expect, which is something I love. Season three has a VERY different vibe from season two - more similar to season one IMO, but so far only the first epi has aired so who knows where it will end up?? Next epi is on tonight though, yay...something fun to watch :)

Glad you're enjoying it!!
