Our daughter slept in the bassinet for around 4 weeks (which had padding on each side) and then in her crib from then on. I had the bumper pads in there just no blanket. When they are really young (up until the start rolling over really) they dont move very much around the crib. I used a swaddle for a blanket to keep her warm in the winter (which actually helped her sleep) and when she couldn't be swaddled anymore I used a blanket that she wore (I can't think of the name).
