Round solitaire removal

Realistically, just how risky is removing a round diamond from a solitaire setting ? The setting is 6 prong platinum (softer than gold?)

I've taken it to a couple of places and maybe because it's a 5.95 carat they are stating this risk (to cover their butt, understandably) -- but as a novice the mere mention of the word "risk" is scary.

HOW concerned should I be ?

One guy did say "minimal" risk.

Do they bend just 2 or 3 prongs or all of them ?

THANKS.

It's not really very difficult and in most cases the risk is rather low but it's not zero and the 'most' qualifier there is important. A significant part of the problem is the possibility of a pre-existing chip that's placed under the prong to hide it and that you and they didn't know about. As soon as they touch a tool to it, people tend to want to hold the benchman responsible. On a stone that's worth tens of thousands of dollars where the fee is in the dozens, it's not surprising that they are worried, especially if this isn't leading into some other sort of job or sale for them.

If you've got insurance, there's a pretty good chance that both cases (previous damage and damage caused accidentally by the jeweler) would be covered losses but ask your insurer FIRST if you're counting on this.

I can see that -- puts it in a different light.

It needs to come out bottom line so you've helped ease my worries.

Thanks.
