I need some of your expertise here...
I have been looking for an engagement ring for the past few month. I have made a purchase of a 2.31ct Pear Shape, I color, VS1, 1.76 ratio, Depth 56.2, Table 54, Polish VG, Sym G. At first I loved this diamond, but over the past few days I have been stressing that maybe I made the wrong choice. Honestly, I have done so much research and read so many blogs that I might be stressing myself out. I am worried it may be too big, where I could get something smaller (more simple) with more clarity and a little chubbier ratio for the same price. I have 30 days to return it and get something different if necessary.

My future fiancé and I have been together for several years. She loves solitaire settings and wants something "simple" as she does not wear much jewelry. She wanted a pear or a round shape.

If any of you could weigh in on this diamond (ignore the setting as I ask them to set it in something so I could see what it looks like). The end ring would be 5 prong and similar 18k band size 6.

Thanks for you help!

It certainly is a big stone...how well is it lighting up when you move it? At the rounded end? Any facets lighting up down towards the pointed end?
From my prospective, it is a tad long, however, if size is one of her/your priorities that may be fine. (that temp setting isnt doing it any favorites o_O)

How big is your GF's finger? I'm not sure how to help you except to maybe show you other stones in your budget.

We can show you other options (given your budget/specs) and you can decide what you want to do from there.

The facets look great and I believe it is lighting up just fine . Im worried it might look too long. She is a size 6 finger. My concern is that the diamond will look too larger and long on her finger. Would the length be noticeably too long in your opinion?

The round end of a well shaped pear should be a perfect semi-circle. In your second photo the stone doesn't look round, that end seems to have pronounced shoulders. It doesn't look too bad in the first photo, but the prongs might be hiding the shoulders.
Here are the AGS guidelines for pear shaped diamonds, how does yours compare?

personally, yes it would be a little too long and skinny for me but i like a chubbier pear with a ratio more in the 1.45-1.58 range. do you have dimensions of the stones? length x width x depth? There is a site you can enter the dims in and see what it would look like on her finger, it is super helpful when trying to visualize. I'm glad you mentioned about the setting because it is awful, I can't look away!

Personally if your gf likes the longer pear, i would say you can definitely keep with that l:w ratio you have. The one thing i don't love about this stone is the same as prs... there is a pronounced shoulder in the round end and the tip is not symmetrical. The left side is a bit more sloped and the ridge side looks almost marquis-esque. I personally think you can do much better in terms of symmetry. Which is why I would say no to this stone. The tip also looks to have a teeny bit of mushiness....but a video would show this better.

What I like about the stone is that the bow tie effect is not super pronounced, there is a little bit, but it looks like the facets might light up to hide it when the ring is in motion. The bottom facets (round end) also look like they are reflecting light. And you can tell individual facets apart.

For me, I like a fat pear as I am more of a round/oval girl. But I also have short fingers of your girl has long fingers the longer finger coverage might be what she's after w. Appear vs a round.

Eta: +1 to changing the....interesting setting....

Same as what the others have mentioned. Am really not into the shape.

Plus she wanted pear or round? That makes me think that she will prefer a less elongated pear. So suggest around 1.5 ratio.

It’s a different story if she likes pear or marquise which would make me think she prefers the elongated look...

The last time I looked at a pear I got several good suggestions from the others so if you can share your budget I’m sure the experts will chime in with some good suggestions.

Also, is the yellowish tinge obvious? It’s an I so am asking plus pears supposedly show the color a lot more. It does look yellowish in your pics but it could always be due to the pic so best if you look irl. Is your gf sensitive to color or is she ok with warm diamonds? If the former then will suggest go for higher color and lower clarity to offset the price difference.

You have come to the right place to ask. Good luck!

this is a tough one. I own a round, but also love pears. That pear is too narrow and elongated for me - love me a chubby pear. I'd personally return it for a chubbier pear, or just put all the budget into a Whiteflash A Cut Above round diamond (I have one and it's amazing).

The setting is terrible. The ratio is 13.14x 7.45 x 4.19

Thank you for your thoughts... im looking around $13k +/-

Hi! Is this a GIA Certed stone? If not, that could explain why there seems to be as much body color in an I as there appears to be, or it might just be from the surroundings or lighting in your room.
I have a pear and I love it - I've always had a thing for pears! I also have a round diamond that was in my family for many years. I enjoy the round, but I much prefer the graceful appearance of the pear on my finger. Plus, it's different, quite distinctive, and not what everybody else has.
I think if your gf has said that she would like a pear, then that is a very nice way for you to go! Personally, this pear is a little bit too long and narrow for my taste, and I think the others have made a good point about the shape not being symmetrical. Can you return or exchange this stone?

Ok, so i did a comparison of your stone on the left vs an average shaped pear, same ct weight, on the right. This is on a size 6 finger. it is just SO long! It is also very shallow so i guess on the plus side, it does look much, much bigger than 2.3cts.

FWIW, I think what's more important in terms of how a long stone would look on a size 6 finger, is how long her fingers are. If she has long fingers, as I do, an elongated stone would look just fine. If her fingers aren't on the longer side, then perhaps you'd want to go with a shorter stone. Either way, pear shapes give more finger coverage than rounds do and face up bigger for their weight than rounds. And I think that your comparison post, @farralyn, is very helpful! Even if you'd go with a more "average" ratio in a pear, you'd still get a beautiful look on her size 6 finger! :)
