For those of you who have been helping me select a diamond- thank you! Link to previous thread here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/ring-upgrade-continued-more-diamond-sizes.242633/

I am 99% sure I'm going with the 0.91ct but today I received the GIA report for the 1ct so I can review it. I don't believe the angles are great but I'm not an expert! I've put it in the HCA calculator & it's more than 2 (can't remember exact number). I don't know how to do that table/crown/pavilion chart thing. Hoping @OoohShiny @sledge @purplesilk can impart their wisdom!

The 1ct stuck on top of my current setting.

33.5 crown angle is still quite low and will mean more white light than fire.

Small table will offset that to some degree, though, although 80% LGFs will give 'splintery' light return.

Remind me - you preferred white light/brightness/splintery??

If not, there are 146 D-G FL-SI1 diamonds in the virtual inventory in the search engine that fall with PS-recommended ranges for table size and depth (if I've got the numbers correct!)...:

Ultimately you have to go with your gut - buying 'the right stone' on paper is different to buying the stone that makes your heart sing, and the latter you will love whereas the former you may never love!

I'm not overly excited about the specs on this one either. However, when I pull up the AGS proportions charts, it shows that the stone has a decent shot of being cut well. FYI, the HCA came back as 2.4 as I just re-ran it. Typically you will want an HCA score of 1-2.

I think the more important issue here is in your last thread, you indicated you just didn't like the way this stone looked to your eyes. I would agree with @OoohShiny these specific angles with the 80 LGF's is creating a look you don't appreciate.

For that reason, I would reject the stone.

One item that hasn't been discussed much is the price of this diamond. I noticed early in your threads you had about a 7,000 pound budget. Today's currency rate converts that to roughly $8,942 USD. If I subtract an additional 25% for VAT, taxes, etc. that leaves you a budget of about $6,700 USD (5,245 pounds). I'm not sure if that is the diamond only, or the diamond & additional setting modifications you had planned.

I mention this because I wanted to present some options to you from alternate sources. I'm not bashing or trying to steal away business from your local jeweler, but I think you need to know what is available for the money you can spend. If you decide to buy from any of these -- great. But if not, then maybe you can use the information to negotiate a better deal for yourself with the local guy.

Super Ideal Diamonds -- guaranteed performers, complete images, AGS certs, etc. Additionally both HPD & WF have excellent upgrade programs for the future -- spend $1 more and get full credit of the original stone, period. Both have top notch customer service to boot and will ship internationally.

GIA XXX Diamonds -- I've filtered through and tried to find a few that have good angles that I think could work for you. The issue is I'm going off angles and videos/pics mainly. I'd like to have an ASET or idealscope image to confirm light performance.

Thank you both for all your research. Unfortunately DH wants us to go to our usual jeweller for sentimental reasons as well as the great work they do. This means using their diamond rather than getting one in myself.

The 1ct report reconfirmed that I just wasn't that into it when I saw it in person (maybe my eyes aren't so bad after all!). I preferred the splintered rainbow flashes of the 0.91ct vs the bigger flashes in the 1ct. From what I've learned so far I seem to be in the minority but the heart wants what it wants!

And I think with that last statement, you have your answer. The 0.91ct is your diamond. :cool2:

Based on this, we know you like a 60/60 stone with ideal cut proportions. This isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, it's just what you prefer. You should be happy with what you buy. Period.

I am not certain what you will be paying for the 0.91ct stone, but I do hope the above information helps you in some manner negotiate the best deal possible for yourself.

God speed my friend. Be sure to post pics once it's all done. ;)2

What he said ^^^ :D lol

You are buying while fully informed of the options available, and with an understanding of what to look for, so that is all we can ask! Personal taste is just that, so if you like 60/60s, that is just fine - as I understand it they were 'in fashion' for a while, so you're certainly not alone!

Make sure you're not overpaying for it by using the search tool to compare prices, and we will look forward to pics of the finished ring :))
