I started a thread here about my ring upgrade:
https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/ring-upgrade-please-help-with-new-diamond-size.242125/

I asked my jeweller to give me quotes based on 0.80ct, 0.90ct & 1ct. These were the stats he gave me:

0.80ct F colour si1 clarity
0.90ct E colour si1 clarity
1.00ct E colour si1 clarity

I will ask about cut. Assuming cut is excellent for all stones, is si1 ok for clarity? What about F vs E for colour? I'm a complete novice.

SI1 can be beautifully eye clean...even at 6”-8” from your eyes. You need to be specific, when you discuss clarity. You also want to ensure the inclusions are clear, and do not show easily from the sides, either....not just face-up.
F color is still colorless, but you won’t pay a premium for F color like you will for E or D.
My EC is a G SI2, and it’s more “clean” than the VS graded EC’s I compared it with, and just as white as the D I put it next to. Even if you’re color sensitive, you won’t see tint in an F.
The position and type of inclusions in those diamonds will impact how eye-clean they are.

When I was messing around with the diamonds the last time I was in I used a loupe to look for inclusions. The ones he showed me were definitely eye-clean but I enjoyed trying to find the inclusion. So I should tell him I'm happy with F colour. I'll ask him about cut aswell.

One good thing - I showed the quote to DH & he said "we agreed on 0.90ct didn't we?!" I'm not going to correct him & say it was 0.80ct

HA HA!!! :lol-2: That’s awesome!!! :Up_to_something2:

Great news. Will you be able to post GIA number for any stones he offers? Performance and inclusion needs to be evaluated as the sum total of all parts along with the angles.

What did the jeweller say regarding you buying a superideal and them just doing the setting?

I don't think he wants me to do that. He said he can source the best quality etc

I don't think he wants me to do that. He said he can make most profit by sourcing stones of the cheapest Rap price and lowest quality he can get away with etc
Edited for accuracy ;) lol

It's not the first time it's happened, though, so it looks like we need to search for virtual inventory only...

He won’t be able to source the superideals like WF’s ACAs or CBI, BGD as those are in house and owned by their respective companies. We can help you get pretty close with the cheat sheet of angles posted but they won’t have superideal meet point symmetry and angles and the same precision of cutting. We can definitely get you a better stone than you’ll see in most British jewellers tho

Hmmmm.... I'm going back soon to pick up my repaired eternity ring- I'll speak to him about this. Thank you

It's not a complete deal-breaker if he doesn't want to set external stones, lots of places don't - it just means that we need to work to find you one that he can bring in that has potential :)

My chipped eternity ring is ready for me to collect so I'll be going back to my jeweller on Saturday. I'll take pics of the 0.90ct & 1ct & report back! Very excited since I think the 0.90ct sounds perfect for me

Excellent stuff!

Make sure you get the GIA grading report numbers for any stones you are looking at.

If he is pressurising you into committing to a particular stone on the day, ignoring the fact that such a move is a Red Flag to walk away ;)) you should run the numbers through the HCA tool under the Tools tab at the top of the forum, to weed out anything over 2.

You should also ask if he can bring in anything on the Rapaport system. If he says he can, you can go with some suggestions... ;)

I bolded some keypoints above. More bang for your buck getting an F. Also, SI1 doesn't always ensure it's eye clean, but many are. As noted, it depends on location, type, etc.

I'll echo this. It's dangerous to buy a stone by the criteria you listed. GIA cert will tell us angles and percentages to help ascertain performance. Also, the plot map and listing of inclusions will be critical. For instance if clouds are grade setting and it has a note that says "additional clouds not shown" then you could have an issue with it being cloudy or hazy.

Please be sure to request that additional information. Also, if you can request an idealscope and ASET image that would help as well. If he can't provide you images, maybe you can buy your own scopes and confirm when you go into the store.
