I'm not sure what thread this would go into, so please forgive me if this isn't the place for it!

After we hit out growth peak, our bodies still produce Human Growth Hormone (HGH), but instead of growing upwards, we grow outwards.

My question is this: How many ladies (or men) have had to have their engagement/wedding rings resized due to them no longer fitting?
I heard pregnancy affects it too, but that is only for the duration of the pregnancy -- do please correct me if I'm wrong.

Much thanks!

The pregnancy thing is usually just temporary. I didn't have to size my rings for 25 years. But I eventually DID have to size up a little. For that reason I discourage full eternity rings. Most women do weigh a little more at 50 than they did at 20!

My rings have fit the same for about 5 years now. In pregnancy they did not fit but when I lost the weight they fit again. But I would still not get a full eternity *unless* from a vendor who could remake the ring (using the same stones) if necessary down the road.

I still have the same ring size as I did when I got engaged 11 years ago. I had to go up about 2 sizes when I was 7 months pregnant but I was able to get my set back on shortly after my son was born.

Soooooooo true! :knockout:

I've worn the same size rings for 11 years (since engagement). Pregnancy sure did swell my fingers though, I could not wear my set for months!

I actually think my fingers are shrinking now that I'm getting older....kinda like the fat in one's face starts melting away with age! All that fat leaving my face and fingers are depositing themselves in the love-handle area

I think it can vary from person to person. I've been married 31 years, had five children, and have gained ~20 pounds from when I was married (boo!). I now wear about 1/2 size bigger than I did when I was married at age 23. Even during pregnancies when I gained around 35 - 40 pounds (I had 10-pound+ babies), I could wear my rings throughout the pregnancies, so weight gain (up to a point) doesn't seem to affect my ring size very much.

But ... I'm anticipating that eventually I will need a larger ring because my mom has arthritis in her hands (and elsewhere) and her knuckles have swollen from it, making it very hard to get a ring to fit because it must go over her knuckle, and then is too big on the finger below the knuckle. She's had some of her rings remade so they can open wider to go over her knuckle and then close back to fit her finger better.

Been married 10 years and in the almost 15 that I have known my husband my ring size has changed for the smaller believe it or not. I used to be a 6 when wearing one and now I am closer to a 4 1/4 when wearing one ring. Due to my hand getting slammed in a car door, I don't tolerate snug rings so I usually get about a 4 1/2 or 4 3/4 depending on the ring to give my skin some "breathing room" while wearing a set or stackers. I think when I reset my current ring though I will take it to a 4 1/2 as this is feeling a bit loose for the winter.

When I was pregnant I was closer to a 5.5 during the last trimester or so, but I went back to my normal ring size in a few days after I lost all the built up fluids.

Everyone is different though. I know some friends who never went back down in ring size after pregnancy and I know some who didn't retain fluids in their hands so they could wear the rings just fine.

Oddly enough I am about the same weight I was in highschool when I got professionally sized for the first time. When I gained a lot of weight (and I mean a LOT) I never went up in size, however when I lost it all again my finger size drastically shrunk. So go figure on why that happened.

I also found that weight gain had minimal influence on my ring size. At my heaviest post-partum I was a whopping 50lbs heavier than I am now, but my rings fit then too. Just a little tighter. They are much more comfortable now and if I was permanently that size I would have resized the rings I suppose.

Climate has an effect on ring size too. Over 27 years, my size went up +1. But then I moved to an area with high humidity and in the summer, +1.5 or so would be more comfortable while becoming too loose in the winter. I don't think finger size changes drastically if it's only 1 size every 20 years or so. I do avoid full eternities though, because of the humidity problem.

I have been married 26 years had 2 kids and tend to gain weight easily :nono: my ring size has went up almost 2 sizes since I have been married :errrr:

It's interesting you mention this because I have found through our clients that weight gain really does not have that much impact on a person's ring size as one would imagine, however, arthritis surely will. The pain and swelling over time is a true bother and a re-size will most likely have to be made. :(( My mom also has arthritis and these same issues so, I'm hoping I won't develop it eventually as well. I wish you the same!

As far as pregnancy, it seems to affect everyone differently. My fingers have definitely increased in size, about 1/4-1/2 a size and the rings are now very tight. It's been 2 years since the pregnancy and I've only gained 2-3 lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight, so I assume it's permanent.

I was thinking about this today. I have had the same sized fingers since I was in high school. I have a sneaking suspicion my size will never change (although I long to be a size 4)

I've been married 26 years and my ring size hasn't changed. My rings were a little snug during the later months of pregnancy but I could still get them on and off. I've put weight on and off over the years, fluctuating about 15 pounds, but it never seemed to affect my ring size.

In high school I was a 7.5 (my dad gave me a promise ring). I lost 70lbs and went down to a 7, then I went on the depo shot (bad bad stuff :nono:) and gained all the weight back ;( I'm working on losing it again  but noticed that when I went shopping for a new ring my finger is a 6.5 in the more delicate sets and a 7.25 with my current set (which is 8.5 mm wide total). That's a period of about 10 years.

Body type can affect whether your ring size changes with weight gain or loss quite a lot. I am very small boned, so no knuckles to speak of, and weight loss or gain affects my ring size *drastically*. If I'm very, very thin, like I was in my teens and early '20s (prior to thyroid cancer ) I wore a size 2 1/2. And I still have no knuckles when I'm skinny. As a size 16 in my '30s (yikes, yes) I wore a 5.5 or 6. Currently a 4.5 is about right.
