Ring size dilemma

Hi all,

Not sure if you remember me but I posted a thread two months ago asking for advice on choosing my engagement ring. Well it has finally arrived! There is one problem though - the size. I ordered at size 4.5 as I have slim fingers. When I went to put the ring on, it went on fine and I didn't need to force it down or anything like that. Before going to bed, I tried to take it off but it got stuck! I have tried to take it off with Vaseline, hand cream and cold water but they don't work. Maybe the hot weather lately has something to do with it, I'm not sure. The weird thing however, is that the ring is a tad too big when it sits where it's meant to. I don't know what to do. If I get it resized for ease of removal, it will make it difficult and annoying to wear long-term due to spinning around my finger. Don't know what to do

I have a similar problem. Our knuckles are obviously larger than our finger. I use a shot of windex. That way it cleans the ring too. Hope this works for you.

You probably need some sizing beads or something similar.

I'd get it sized up to a 4.75 or a 5 with sizing beads for now: when you wear it with bands, you can have the beads taken out.

For what it's worth, some people's hands fluctuate dramatically. In summer, some days I just wear my e-ring alone: in winter, if I want to keep that sucked on my finger, I have to stack two bands with it to get the necessary tightness. Good times!

You might try a very slim temporary ring guard which you can install yourself. Once the ring is on the finger, you hike upo the side of the guard a bit and the ring will stay a little tighter, but it will slide lower when you want to take off the ring. You ought to wait to see how much variation your finger has in size due to weather, etc before cutting and sizing larger or soldering it with sizing balls. You need to get the ring off and I am sure that if it went on, it will come off. Soak your hand in some ice cold water for a few minutes and then lube up the finger. Really, if this is required you need to make the ring a bit bigger or get a hinged shank installed. If the ring is easier to get off, the just adding even a single sizing ball may do what is needed.

I had two sizing beads placed and they helped tremendously!!! The ring goes on fine but is a bit more difficult to remove without being uncomfortable, this way though, I know it won't fly off in the winter months.

Even with the sizing beads my ring still spins a little, not all the way around but to the far side of my finger (does that make sense?)

Don't fret...lots of options!! :twirl:

If your ring is still stuck:

Windex is my first go-to method to get rings off when they're stuck IMO. If that sucker went on, Windex will get it off. It's slipperier than soap or most other things. (I work at an antique store that has some fine jewelry, and having customers get rings stuck on their fingers is pretty much a weekly occurance- and I haven't yet seen Windex not get a stuck ring off, thank god.)

If Windex doesn't work, then look to see if you have any silicone based hair glosser. Basically it's exactly the same as, er, lube. (The ingredients should be pretty much dimethicone + fragrance, with maybe vitamin E or another plant oil or something but no alcohol.) That stuff is absolutely the slipperiest crap in the universe, and if neither windex nor silicone lube can get your ring off, I'd guess you'll have to have it cut off.

Wait til your hands are a bit chilly to try to get the ring off, not the first thing in the AM either because a lot of people's fingers swell a little at night.

I'd get sizing beads after you determine how much room you need. I have them and love them- the ring fits a much larger range of sizes with them, and doesn't spin much.

I would go ahead and second David's suggestion. Since your ring just arrived, wait a few weeks in order to figure out how much your finger fluctuates in size because of swelling, weather, etc...Then you will be able to make a more educated decision in terms of the best route to take. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies. I will try out the Windex suggestion and then consider getting the sizing beads. However, I need to order our wedding bands very soon. Do you think I should order a bigger size for those and get sizing beads installed? How much of a difference would going to 4.75 make as opposed to 5? Thanks :)

I have the exact same problem as you. My size is also 4.5. The thing is, it is sometimes "tight" on my finger. It is hard taking it off (even during the cold weather here). The side of my finger would be red for awhile everytime I take it off or put it on. Then, I've decided I need to size it up. Since I need to get it refurbish because of some tiny yellow dot on the ring, I dropped it off today and going to size up to 4.75 (snug). 4.75 might cause too much spinning. The guy said it's like 4.70. So... I'll be without my ring for 2 weeks. I miss it already.

Today was a cooler day and I was able to get it off! No Windex or anything required, I just kept forcing it until it came off. Was a tiny bit painful but at least it doesn't need to be cut off.

Now I'm a bit unsure what to do. As it is, on a cool day, the 4.5 is actually big on my finger and spins quite a bit. It needs to be removed using a bit of force but on a warmer day, it is a more snug fit but doesn't seem to come off. Do I go for the sizing balls or the hinged stank? The latter seems like the better option but I'm a bit wary of having the shank cut off my ring as it has lots of detailed scroll work which would need to be redone. I don't know how much that'd cost. I found only one jeweller in my state (I'm in Australia) that installs the Fingerfit brand ones anyway so would need to see them. Alternatively, I could get the sizing balls to help with spinning but not sure if they'd make it harder to remove the ring as well since I really had to force it now. In summer the ring would probably have to stay on?

I also read something about a butterfly spring that gets put inside the ring but couldn't find any information on any jeweller websites regarding it. Ring guards look good but I'd prefer something that I can just put on and forget about rather than replacing every few years.

Anyone?

The butterfly spring works pretty well too; I know a few people that have them. The sizing bumps are nice and helps keep the ring from spinning. I always use Windex to get a ring off too. In the summer I can barely get my rings off at night; in the winter they are a bit loose.

Does anyone know what the requirements are for the ring if you want to have a hinged shank installed? I've been told it's too thin by itself (bit less than 2mm) and that I would need to have it soldered to the wedding band! I don't really want to do this but not sure if I have any other options. My knuckle is over 1 size bigger than my finger so don't know what to do. I don't think sizing balls would be effective in this case :(

hm, I see your problem. I wear a 5 and in the summer it's a perfect 5 and in the winter it can at times be a loose and spinning 5. My thought for not going smaller is that once I pair it with a Wband, in the summer it will be toooo tight (think looking like stuffed sausage with the rings on- which I hate). One thing you can thing about is sizing up to the next quarter size- 5- and put in sizing beads. For those winter months you can stack an extra ring with your set and for summer you can just wear your Ering and Wband.
