Ok guys, so, my long awaited engagement ring will be here tomorrow! And I need help!

Although I played a large part choosing the stone and designing it, we aren't getting officially engaged until my divorce comes through (which will be anything from 2-3 months from now).

OH wants me to see the ring when it comes tomorrow to make sure I am happy with it. I'm not sure, as although I know the design I haven't 'seen' it so it will still be a surprise.

Advice? I am dying to see it, and yeah, part of me wants to know it is what I wanted/ordered; but another part is like 'but it will be a surprise otherwise!'

Thoughts appreciated!

See it definitely! If my partner wanted me to make sure it was 100% perfect I’d take a peak since it’s such an important purchase. Anyways if you don’t take a second look for some time until the proposal you may even forget how the ring looks and feels on your finger exactly! The proposal will be the surprise =)2

I love the idea of being surprised when you finally get to wear your ring. However, I would want to be sure all is as it should be, so you can quickly address any issues if there are any.

Thank you! I don't even know if I will try it on, I just want to check the setting as it has a halo and milgrain and quite an open/raised head which I want to check for light return. I have just seen people get wonky settings, or the milgrain is wrong, or a diamond is loose, and I don't want that...

I am so OCD lol

Life is short
And 2020 has been an awful year
You know you are committed to this relationship.
Don't just look at it !
At least wear it around the house and enjoy !

Try it on!. be sure it fits your finger.

Do you think that waiting longer will make you remember the moment more? Why not agree to see it but ask him if joining can make the moment special so that it can be a memorable event?

I’d definitely enjoy the ring for a bit together—plan a special time this weekend to do it! Make it a special memory that is “in the making,” so to speak! You want to be sure that the ring is just right for when it’s time. Some vendors have return/exchange/fix windows, so you also want to be aware of that. Plan a bit of time to enjoy this exciting next step, put your minds at ease, and enough time will go by that the actual moment will feel very special. :)

Please return with the engagement shots! We can’t wait to see them!

Oh man, don't do this to me! I know it will fit, I so want to try it but feel I shouldn't..!

I like this suggestion. Like, seeing the ring is an 'event', and then the proposal is a separate one. Hmm.

Again, I like this suggestion; see the ring but make it a bit more special than 'here we go, this is it' lol.

I am honestly so nervous. It's a marquise centre stone which we bought based on pics and videos, rather than seeing it IRL, and I am slightly terrified lol

Yes, absolutely examine the ring within the return period for any issues. You may also want to schedule an appointment with an independent appraiser to make sure everything is on the up and up.

Definitely examine the ring carefully and make sure you try it on!

As others have mentioned, you must ensure you're happy with the ring before the exchange/return period expires.

Even the best companies have things go off track sometimes. How would you feel if you wait three months to see the ring, only to discover that it was accidentally made a bit too small, or an area of the ring doesn't look quite right? How will the vendor react to you waiting months before ensuring the ring has no issues?

Dear op,

how is this even a question??! Im astonished that someone would have such self control! I would not only just "look", I would put it on my finger and admire it on my hand and wear it for the day...

i'd be waiting eagerly for the parcel. And once it arrives, ripping the box open like an animal to get to the ring. But that's just me.

I'm very good at waiting. I once waited 1.5 weeks to open a box marked from DKJ. Inside were gorgeous inside-out hoop earrings but I didn't know that. I just waited for DH to come home from a business trip so he could be there too since they were a surprise from him. It drove DH almost crazy that I wasn't squirming open the box (he is not good at waiting, lol). I could have waited longer....even had some fun and made a game out of it....but I don't want to intrude further on OP.

Thank you for saying this, I have suggested this to my OH for insurance purposes. Also want to check the cert against the stone (or have someone do it for me as not done it myself before); though I think I will know if it's 'off' as obsessively looked at videos

How can you do that?! I envy you! I have no self control; I am super fussy when it comes to gifts though (I actually send people a list of 'approved' gifts for birthday and Christmas so that they don't go wrong...!)

This is my main concern.

Do I want to see it? Yep! Do I want to try it on? Double yep! But I want to make sure it's what I envisioned/ordered. And have the opportunity to have any issues rectified.

The company knows the situation and will make minor changes if requested (or rectify if it's flat out wrong) up to 3 months. But I kinda don't want to wait 3 months, find something wrong, a d then wait some more lol

If the ring is perfect in design execution and sizing, then waiting or not waiting is a matter of the value you place on seeing it for the very first time during the proposal.

However, if some adjustment to the ring is required, then you are choosing between the following scenarios:

1. Don't wait. Determine/discuss the adjustments with the jeweller, return the ring and have it adjusted. This could probably/possibly be accomplished within a three-month window so that you'll have the corrected ring back by the time you expect the proposal.

2. Wait. During the proposal, in three months, see and try on the ring for the first time - maybe discover it doesn't fit. I'm assuming your SO/you might plan something special for the proposal (dinner, flowers, whatever), so discovering the ring isn't right might put a bit of a damper on the atmosphere. You'd also then be engaged but not having a ring to wear until the issues were resolved.

Also, you said your divorce should come through in two to three months. What if it takes longer? If you already know the ring is perfect, no worries. If the divorce doesn't come through for five months, is the jeweler willing to wait for you to examine the ring and discuss whether changes are necessary?

Its up to you and your SO to decide what's right for you.

if i were you, i would totally see it to make sure it's what i wanted! so that i can sleep at night! :lol-2: congrats btw!

Make sure everything is ok with the ring (see it) while it is still within the return window. 2-3 months is too long to wait.

Yes, it absolutely needs to be seen now. Look at it very carefully to be sure there are no problems with it. It would be terribly disappointing to wait 3 months, have the official proposal and then have to send the ring back. You have plenty of time to have the ring fixed or remade if you look at it now.

I also recommend looking. I chose the setting but not the stone for my ring. My husband dragged it on and proposed half a year later than he was supposed to- way out of any return period. My original stone was a bust, it is just languishing away in a drawer and I wish I could've exchanged or refunded it.

Yes, please, examine it closely and try it on -- if it matches your expectations, take it off and put it away -- if there are issues, right away take a few careful photos and send an email to the vendor.

Im truly astounded by your discipline. It is really impressive.

Im not like that in most things, emotional. Jewelry, for me, is emotional.

I can see challenging oneself by making it a game or something like that just to see if i can do it...

But i get SO much pleasure and such a thrill when i tear open the delivery parcel and see the jewelry. And so fun to put it on.

I do understand the specialness of the shared experience.

I suppose i just lack self control and discipline when THE jewelry, finally arrives.

Concur with the others - definitely look and try it on, to make sure all is well.

DK :))

Quick update: we missed the sodding delivery! Our door bell decide to break (without us realising) so we didn't hear them. Redelivery scheduled for tomorrow; fitting a new door bell this evening, but also going to sit outside to wait lol.

Decided I am going to look at it to check all is ok, and try it on, but not look at it on my finger. That way at least that element is a surprise.

Thanks all for your advice ☺️
