Some of you may have remembered, in my previous post I was seeking your advice because my stone was set much lower than I preferred. Also the prongs looked really heavy so I was going to ask the jeweler to lighten the prongs a little. However after a week, I got used to the heavy prong and I was getting love the way it was, plus I did not want to have any further problem so I just left it as it was.

However, recently I found one of my prongs was upright and there was a big gap between the stone. Other prongs also had little space, so I went to my jeweler to tighten them. I asked them to examine all the prongs very carefully for any future potential danger by catching fiber and sweaters. I kind of mentioned that I wanted them to make sure even thin paper would not slide into easily.

They reset my stone. They bent the claws more over the stone to ensure its security. And they changed the tip shape from square to round by shaving them so that they won’t catch things. None of them were my intention, but they did it for me for security reason, and I guess it went too far.. Maybe the way I communicated with them made them feel that they should to redo the setting work to make me feel better. Now the stone is 1mm even lower than before. And my center stone looks much smaller compare to “before”. It looks lost in the ring

.

I am not blaming my jeweler because I know they did all their best for me, and they were always trying to respond any of my requests. Their polish work is much nicer than before and I can tell they made a big effort for me. But I am little sad about the outcome .

I think I learned a lesson. There is a reason for the certain shape of prong tips and pong thickness for the entire design of the ring. Now I am looking at Scott Kay catalog, the way they set their prongs is kind of upright and the tips are square. So, I believe the setter follows exactly the way Scott Kay’s would set at the first place. Then they changed it because I was worried about catching things. Maybe my obsession made things worse? All I wanted was tighten the prongs and make sure all other prongs were secure enough. As many people suggested in this forum, probably sending the ring to the designer to set a stone or repair the ring is a wise idea. The people who designed the ring know what change may effects on its entire design of the ring, so that they may have different approach when the ring had any issues including customers preference issues.

In my previous post, I said I missed delicate look prongs. I was not sure if I liked the look that my stone was sitting in the “heavy cupcake cup.” But I guess “heavy cup” was needed to keep the center stone distinct from the pave setting. Now my ring has more delicate look, but my center stone is not standing out like it used to be.

I still love my ring. It is still beautiful and I know I cannot do too much now unless I change the entire thing. So, I am trying to get used to the new look. But I just wanted to let PS people know that thickness of prongs and shape really effect the entire look. So we should be super careful when we request things to the jewelers. We need a very good communication with the person who is doing the job. I should have asked what the “side effect” from what they were going to do. In my case my stone looked bigger with heavy square shaped prongs. And maybe 1mm height made a difference too.. I was thinking about getting a matching wedding ring, but my center stone look lost already, so I am not sure if I will get it or not.

Thank you for reading this long post and as always, your thoughts will be appreciated.

To be honest, I'd just go back to the jeweller and ask if they can make yet another modification. At the end of the day you need to be happy with the ring. It's not something you should have to "get used to".

As long as they know you're not mad at them or unhappy with the quality of work, I don't see a problem. It sounds like you have a good relationship going with them.

Edit: The more I think about it the more I think you need to get it done in the style you want. It's a hassle and maybe a bit stressful, but will that matter in 20 years when you can look at your ring and know it's perfect?

Hi Splinter,

It is nice hearing from you again! Sorry I did not reply to you in the different post regarding "feather". I am working on it now. I really appreciated your reply on the subject.

Yes, I like my local jeweler. As to my e-ring problem, I can clearly see they always try to help me and they have never given me a hard time when I requested very picky requests. But somehow we have communication problem... somehow it always go too far. For example, if I say "I don''t like set the stone too low" they set the stone as low as possible.

You are right, I should get it done with the style I want. But,this upgrading E-ring process has been really stressful for me already and I am not sure if I will be able to get what I am 100% satisfied with even I go for more ugly mess. I am not sure if there is such thing "perfect" for me.

I am sending some photos...

Please tell me what you think.

Only in the last pictures can I tell any difference at all, and trust me it is SMALL! And I don''t think your diamond looks any different personally. But that is JMO!

I can see only a minor difference, but I do prefer the way it looks in the after photos. I don''t think it makes your diamond look smaller though.

As to the side view, I like “After”

If I don''t see the ring from the top, I think "after" looks better, in the pictures anyway.

I only notice a small difference, but I like the after look of the ring better. It looks a tiny bit lower in the last pic, but not all that much. It does not make your stone look any different to me.

I dont see much difference, but I did want to say your ring is beautiful

I like the after better than the before.

I also prefer the after, although the differences are very minimum.

Okay, do you have OCD because I see SO LITTLE difference between the versions! If anything I prefer the after, like the others have said. I think your mind is playing tricks on you re: the perceived size difference ... you might be just experience the very common "Diamond Shrinkage Syndrome" ... were our eyes just get used to the size and it seems to shrink.

I would NOT mess with it anymore. To get it higher might weaken the structure of the prongs & make a big ol'' disaster or end up costing you a bunch of $$ (because the jeweler did the best he could ... it looks like a fine job this time... and he can''t POSSIBLY predict the "side effects" as you call them because everyone sees things DIFFERENTLY!) And even if you did all that & paid all that -- you might not see the difference you''re expecting from the 1mm or whatever.

Give it a few weeks & see if your eyes adjust again. Lovely ring!

I barely notice a difference either, but I slightly prefer the 2nd one too. Give it time, maybe you''ll start to love it

Here''s as close as I could get to a side by side ...

I can see the difference. I''m digging the AFTER - really nice. Beautiful ring and the stone looks the same to me.
Trust me, I am some picky lady - I like it.

I''m not seeing much of a difference either, and as everyone has said, it''s a gorgeous ring!!

I squinted and squinted some more trying to find differences. The ones I found were very slight, and the after pics make the ring look more lovely than it already was.

I''d be happy with either setting. Looks like a beautiful ring!!

Try to relax and enjoy your beautiful ring.

I see the differences, but they are subtle. Very Subtle.

And very nice. Especially from above, I think the prong tips look very good after modification.

I know diamond height is a personal preference, and I can see that yours is nestled into the ring, but I would maybe sit on it for a few weeks to see what your take is? It is quite a lovely ring, and because of the cathedral bit the diamond is still pretty high overall. It will keep the ring functional to have these smooth prongs and lower height. But if it still bothers you after many months, take it back and see if they can raise the stone.

I just wanted to thank you all for all your replies and good advice!
I am sorry for this late post. My computer has been keep shutting down, probably because I have too many digital images of my jewelry, which killing my harddisk.

I think I am getting used to the new look. It still bothers me sometime when I see it from the top – I still have some kind of feeling that the prongs were acting as a frame for the center stone, which distinct from the pave setting before. Probably my mind is just playing tricks on me…

Anyway now I know the main problem is. It’s not the setting or the height; simply my center stone is NOT big enough for me! Maybe I just need bigger stone!
Once again, thank you so much for all your help!
