Hi all!

I've been peeping old PS threads for some time but this is my first post. My BF and I are getting ready to pull the trigger on an ering. I have done some reading and research and we went to a jeweler to do an in-person try on, so at this point I am feeling like I know just enough to be dangerous.

This is the diamond I have on hold at WF and am planning to purchase later today: https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-4287215.htm

I have picked out the YG Legato Sleek Line Solitaire as the setting--most of my jewelry is in YG and I like the classic look (also thinking that the YG might complement the K color a little better than Plat, which I would pick otherwise). The total cost comes in nicely within our budget (~$9.3k out of $10k).

So my question is, is there anything I am missing? I am not very color sensitive and feel comfortable with moving forward with the purchase given WF's return and upgrade policies, but one thing I do not know much about is inclusions... are there any better options available for a similar or slightly higher price?

Thanks for any help/advice you may have to offer!!

I’m not crazy about that largish inclusion under the table and would want to be sure it’s not visible. You can ask them if it has an impact and maybe they could make a video for you that’s not so magnified to help you decide. Unfortunately WF doesn’t have a lot of stock in that price range unless you drop in size. I took a look at HPD and found this one. It is more money, but a little larger and better inclusions IMHO.

Thank you for your suggestion! I will reach out to them to ask if they can send me a video that better shows the inclusion. It's definitely better for me to do that due diligence now vs. wait for the stone to arrive and be unhappy with how it looks in person, but I wasn't quite sure how to ask for that info, so that is really helpful.

Thank you for linking the CBI stone too, it looks gorgeous as well! It would be a little stretch of our budget, so I am *hoping* that WF will come back with an acceptable and accurate video of the ACA.

Wow super pretty! It’s a great price. I have a J color and I love it. Honestly since most of your jewelry is yellow gold and this is a K, I think it’s going to look amazing. I love warmer diamonds and think they throw a lot of fire. It will go well with most of your other yellow gold jewelry too. This is a super pretty stone! And a great savings too.

Thank you for weighing in! I was a little hesitant to go down the color scale, but after visiting a jeweler and looking at a range of color grades side-by-side, I am embracing my lack of color-sensitivity since it gets me to everything else I want within my budget. I don't mind a little warmth and am pretty happy about the price--much less than I was expecting to spend to get the finger coverage I want.

Figure out what eye clean means to you, and ask WF to confirm what they see from those sides and distances.

Thanks for the advice, PintoBean! I will put in a call to WF later this afternoon (I've already requested the lower magnification video mwilliamanderson suggested). I think talking to a rep and getting some additional video with help me to make a better informed decision. I really appreciate you all taking the time to weigh in and helping me to figure out what to ask for.

I found a K VS2 H&A on BG, which is very slightly smaller (1.527) but close in price to the WF ACA with the 5% summer discount BG is running ($8500 vs $8000 for the ACA). Is there a way to tell whether the inclusions in the BG stone are preferable to the ACA from the information available, or is this more qualitative and something best determined in-person/with additional videos?

I do not think you need to worry about the inclusions in a VS stone but you should discuss with your representative to make sure you have done your due diligence and feel confident in your purchase. I personally loooove a small table so the WF stone gets me super excited. The BG is also a gorgeous stone. The only issue I would have if it were me is the color as that is a high priority for me. I don't know if, in time, the K will not be pleasing to you. In that case, your upgrade options are more user-friendly with WF than BG. Congratulations on your engagement and no matter which way you go you will have the best of the best!

Thank you for your perspective and kind words! My WF rep was quick to provide an additional video of the stone from slightly farther away:

And she also confirmed that the stone is eye clean. While it looks beautiful to me, I agree with doing my own pre-purchase due diligence to make sure I am not "missing" something since this it my first time selecting a real diamond. I do think you bring up a great point that my tastes may change over time and I may come to desire a whiter stone. But I think for now, given our budget, this is a good balance of our need-to-haves (<$10k, ideal cut, eye clean) with the nice-to-haves (finger coverage and color), and between the two variables, I will take size over color (within reason). I also love the flexibility and peace of mind of WF's lifetime upgrade policy, and I take a lot of stock from the positive experiences PSers have had with WF over the years.

This 1.39 ACA I VS1 also caught my eye. It's a little pricier ($9350 wire) and a little smaller, so we would be at $10.6k all-in (with setting and taxes), a budget stretch but do-able. I could probably tell the difference between the I and the K in both size and color if they were side by side... however, with my preference for YG and my personal (lack of) color sensitivity, I would pick the K.

I have no doubt that the K will be eye clean. It is a beautiful stone! I know you say you’re not color sensitive but I’d still advise perhaps considering this J which also looks eye clean and isn’t too much more expensive. K is just a larger range and an I/J would be a lot safer (but the I would be quite a bit smaller like you already posted).

Hi ac117! I really like the J you linked. It seems like it would be comparable to the original K VS2 that I posted in terms of both clarity and size, since it is also listed as eye clean. I am going to ask WF if they can send me pictures of the J SI1 and K VS2 side by side (from a side view and face up) so I can see what the difference in color is. They have been really nice and attentive about answering my questions, so hopefully they won't mind providing those shots to help me make up my mind (and it will help to ensure that I like what I end up with).

Ultimately, I am okay with paying a little more while staying close to my budget for a difference I can see. I have seen others comment (as you did) that K is a larger range, so if the J and K are close together, I would not mind sticking with the K but if the K is a lower K, the extra ~$1000 to upgrade to a J might be well worth it. Thank you so much for your suggestion!

Update:

My WF rep replied back to me this morning and let me know that they can provide pictures, but that the J is not eye clean from 5-6 inches away and from the side (it is eye clean from 10 inches). I do think the visible inclusion would "bother" me more than the lower color grade, which is not really a bother for me as I don't mind a little warmth.

From the additional information gathering, I now feel confident that the K is the best option for me and I will be happy with it when it arrives. Of course I can't be 100% sure about this since I am buying sight unseen, but I am going to move forward with buying the stone and setting later today and keep my fingers crossed (and post pictures post-proposal).

A huge thank you again to everyone who weighed in and held my hand through this process! PS has been such a tremendous resource, and I really appreciate each of you taking the time to provide your thoughts and help me figure out the right questions to ask to feel confident about this decision.

All I can tell you, is that I have a Whiteflash Expert Selection K colored diamond. I have had an F colored diamond, and J colored diamonds in the past. My K is a 2.02 carat. I am perfectly happy with the K color. and love it I would do what you are doing. If you don't like it, you can always exchange. Best wishes.

PepperT, thanks for taking the time to share your experience. I read through a bunch of other PSer accounts by others who purchased J/K diamonds (particularly through WF) and were happy with their decisions, which definitely helped me to arrive at this conclusion for myself. I am so excited for my ring to arrive!

We finalized the order and paid this afternoon, so now we wait (and get the insurance squared away)... I promise to follow up with pictures!

I also just peeked at your 2.02 K you posted to the K thread a while back.... so incredibly gorgeous!!!

I just watched the new video and have to say the K looks great from a distance. I’m excited for you!

Thanks again for your help, mwilliamanderson. Glad I took your suggestion of asking for the additional video!
