Remember Stephan''s Stone?

Well, I saw it!!! I had Wink send it to me and it is beautiful! Unfortunately, I cannot purchase it at this time. But, I compared it to my own stone (I color VS2 H&A - 8.8mm) stone and I must say it compared quite well. It sparkles like crazy and the rainbows are phenomenal. Of course you can see a faint tint from the side, but, looking at it face up in all sorts of light-restaurant, daylight, fluorescent, halogen - it was just a bit "warmer" than my I. If I had the mula, I would have snatched it up. I just had to see for myself if cut really did make a difference in stones in this color range - and it does. Obviously, not gonna be a crisp white, but darn, if it wasn''t bright and off-white. Anyone who may be considering this stone and has got the funds-I say go for it.
It is truly a beautiful stone!

I''d love to see that stone in person. From the pictures, I feel like the warmth of the M enhances the stone instead of detracting from it.

Here is a funny note that Brian the Cutter from WF told me...he said that 3 times out of 4 when he puts diamonds in front of customers in various color ranges and does not tell them what is what, aka D F G H J or similar...3 times out of 4 the customers unconciously go for the warmer shades.

It''s interesting because so much of the focus is on color, aka the icy white of a D. But that may not be for everyone or even very MANY. I wonder if it''s true that the ''masses'', even well-cut-loving masses would unconciously go for a slightly warmer stone?

The funny thing is that I have seen an ACA E and my almost ACA H and to me they look the same in terms of whiteness esp face down. I don''t do the side comparison really since it''s not super relevant in terms of how you view the stone on a daily wearable basis. But maybe the E makes sense for Greg''s tension because the pavilion and the whole stone is exposed. But for a regular e-ring...my H is super white, and it looks ICY to me!

Of course eyes are going to be different and we always say it''s a preference. But it was really interesting to me that Brian noted that the warmer colors seem to be the pick of more people in general...when they do not know what grade the diamond was given.

So this M...it looks beautiful in pictures and I think it would look spectacular in a Vintage or Antique type setting which may suit its more romantic nature!

I agree about some of the warmer colours looking attractive. I have an E, an H and a few I''s and out of them all I really I think I prefer the I''s. I saw a Tolkowsky ideal cut J in a local store and that was beautiful too. Not yellow, but just not as white as my I. It''s hard to explain, but it was more of a golden bronze colour. On the other hand, I saw an L which was very yellow looking. I wasn''t struck on that one at all. I presume not all lower colour graded stones are tinted in the same way - that is the shade of the tint must vary.

I think that, as everyone keeps saying, you have to see the stone and decide whether the tint in that particular diamond is to your taste.

at 3 carats, its larger than i really want. however, i can talk to wink and see if he has or can get as good a stone in the 1-2 carat range.

i had no idea that an ''M'' could be so good to look at! and at that price, its a bargain. i just can''t imagine wearing a 3 carat diamond, though.....!

Luvmysparklies has been a good friend and client for many years and was very upfront with me as to her intentions. If it is still here in a month or two she will buy it then, but out of respect for me and for Stephan she has not only graciously NOT asked me to hold it for her, but launched this thread to assist Stephan in his quest to sell it. The lady is a CLASS act!

Once this diamond sold, I''d like to buy a ... bigger one (and why not yellower?).
But it could be a fancy shape; who knows, Paul will perhaps try it?
I''m looking for months after a perfect Emerald cut but...
that''s "Mission Impossible" here in Antwerp.
I also love Old Miner cuts.
I used to hate the Princess cut, but... wait and see !

it will be quite large and quite yellow (W-X).
If not to large, why not Fancy Light Yellow?

Yes, the stone looked huge. Wink was kind enough to send me a temporary stone holder ring so that I could view it on my finger. I don''t have a digital camera unfortunately. But here is the scoop.

Looked huge. My own stone as I wrote is an 8.8mm, so putting Stephan''s stone right next to mine showed it to be bigger, but it didn''t dwarf my own stone. So I thought that it would make for a fair comparison. Face up, yes you can see "warmth" but honestly, nothing glaring or in an ugly tint like the lower quality stones at the maul. No brownish ANYTHING, just a very, very light, light yellow FROM THE SIDE. Face up and don''t take this the wrong way, but dingy or as I prefer to say "off-white". This is an exceptional value for the money. I told Wink that I would talk about my observations honestly. This stone compares very favorably next to an I face up. In sunlight, it did the turning dark grey thing that our high quality stones do! I went to Macaroni grill and looked at the stone under those lights and it was ON FIRE!!!! In my own home I looked at it under just regular home lighting and under my halogen lighting...again ON FIRE. Honest.

This stone would be extremely pretty in an antique-like setting. I even thought about the style of a flower or princess ring, with this stone being in the center surrounded by smaller yellow diamonds. Wink knew that I was really wanting to compare apples to apples and that I would be interested, but much further down the road. I just can''t afford it right now. Let me see what else...Well, I will just say that I am a size kinda gal and love my own stone. However, this was very beneficial to have seen an excellent cut stone such as this in this color range. I was originally just kicking around some ideas for something nice to get my mom, so it was never really for me. But now, after having seen this beauty in person, in all sorts of lighting I feel very comfortable going with a warmer "faint tint" stone in a larger size. Knowing first hand what a 3 carat looks like in an M makes me feel quite comfy purchasing in this size/color range as long as the stone''s cutting is up to "our"

standards.

I would like a 4 carat stone at somepoint and if it is well cut like this, I would''nt hesitate (heh, $$$ permitting). I thought to myself, in a 4 carat I would probably move it to an L color since going up in size would intensify the color showing. Not that this is an ugly color to begin with. Overall, I LOVED THIS STONE!!!! I am saving up, just in case Wink still happens to have it. Like I told Wink, even though I had mixed feelings about even talking up this stone (for someone to snatch it up

) I have learned and benefit a lot from the knowledge here and wanted to give something back. If this helps someone out who may be thinking about purchasing this stone or even a different stone in a warmer range, then I am happy to have helped!

I had an interesting experience at Tiffany''s Fifth Avenue store last week. I was looking at 4 to 5 carat stones in the showcase when a salesman approached me and asked if I wanted to look at anything. Since I had already purchased my ring from Whiteflash, I did not want to waste his time so I said I was just looking.

The weather was bad and the floor was practically empty of customers. I think he just wanted to look busy so he insisted on taking out several stones for me to try on. There was a 4.05 carat D and similar sized G and H stones and a 5 carat F. I guess I should never try to get a job as a stone grader because I had the D and the H on the same hand and kept getting them mixed up. I really could not tell the difference. It may be that the H was a better cut. I did not ask for details because I did not want to waste his time in case a real customer came along.

The 5 carat F looked darker to me than the H. If I were making a selection, without considering price(of course the D was the most expensive) I would have chosen the H over the D or F. The H was 4.08, vvs1 and was $85,000. All were round stones.

As to an M color stone, I inherited a three stone Old European ring. I just located the appraisal for that ring. The center stone is 2.60 and the other two stones are about 2 carats each. They range in color from K to M and the M color stone is very bright and beautiful. These European cut stones are very bright and sparkly.

The 3 carat stone at Wink''s is very well cut. As Mara pointed out in a previous post, the term yellow is really misleading in the stones in the higher color ranges. Even from the side of my M stone, I see no yellow and I cannot tell which is the K and which is the M.

I would bet that this 3 carat ring is drop dead gorgeous because of the cut and would not be the dark, muddy looking thing most people imagine when they hear M.

If one wants a large, impressive looking stone at a great price, this is probably a rare opportunity. And you do not have to spend a fortune insuring it.

Yellow gold would be fantastic with that piece - yellow diamond pave even more so: pretty and exotic

I think this is an interesting topic, perhaps people will learn to love diamonds with a lower color grade than H.
I have a little 0.64ct N color too, and my friends can''t stop looking at it.
I also sold a 1.15 J color (De Beers Millenium), and my friend is wearing it in earrings with a H color.
You can''t see the difference.

Color is a very personal thing.
I don''t like vivid yellows, I prefer the look of a cheaper fancy yellow or even fancy light yellow.
I saw a lot of W-X, they are OK too...

PS: Paul is cutting a 8ct fancy pink H&A for me... don''t worry, it''s a joke!
