I will contact Brian Gavin, and I'm curious if there are other vendors who also have this service. This is in regard to my original engagement diamond. Thanks.
 
Would @Wink be able to arrange a CBI re-cut?
 
Eightstar does recuts or at least used too...

I think the I1 is going to make this tricky. i will try GOG. I may wait until after christmas to contact.... I'm sure everyone is slammed right now.
 
Talking with Brian Gavin-- sounds like recutting an I1 (at best) would be dicey and there is no guarantee the stone would survive. (I may still want to take the chance for any improvement though as I am really sad about its performance).

I have no certificate so they can't tell on the front end what's going on with it.

Would you be willing to get them to send it to GIA to get a certification and plot? I had previous spoken to IDJ about this service and they were willing to do it for me.

Yea, I might do that. I will really have to think about all of this. Maybe leaving well enough alone is the best option. I just sent BG a bunch of macros and IS and HA so will see what they think the next step could be.

A thought that I had is that if it is an I, a plot would make cutting it a little less risky I think.

BTW, I just wanted to add that I love reading about all your different projects. Aside from being fairly educational posts, they put bad thoughts into my head.

Whitewave, that is a very kind thing for you to think about. As a jeweler in the midst of an incredibly busy season, it is the kind of thought that I would appreciate.

Even with a report, there is no guarantee that the diamond will be a candidate for recutting. your recut will have to be examined and accepted by your chosen cutter. Even then, there will be no guarantees.

Wink, can you tell me the CBI policy on recutting already cut stones? Does CBI -never- recut “cut stones”? I’m just curious.
 
Sasdly, they do not. CBI rejects more starting crystals than they accept for crafting, for gemological reasons. This extends to recut candidates too. On top of that, the likelihood of any given polished stone being a good recut candidate is low from an economical point of view. Given the odds against success, Crafted by Infinity does not want consumers to go int the time and expense of exporting their diamonds to Belgium for inspection only to be told, "Sorry, this one will not work."

I can also tell you Paul will not recut a diamond to come "close to CBI" just to make someone happy. This may be acceptable elsewhere, but Paul will never deliver a diamond with his name on it that does not meet all established CBI criteria.

Haha for which diamond? I actually just sent them one not too long ago. They are super busy right now, so the recut will probably happen after the holidays.

It’s a 1.25 carat round but it’s not something I care that much about but it could be fun to do later

Btw I once sent them a stone that was around 1.25 and really poorly cut, the end result was 1.1 ideal cut, so I definitely think that it is worth exploring :)
 
You guys know if the stone would have to be graded before they'd look at it?

Just an appraisal is fine more so for insurance purposes, although I am not sure if any insurance will cover damage caused during a recut..

Thanks for the clarification about CBI, Wink. It makes sense, given what I know about CBI’s quality and customer care standards.
