I am new to antique diamonds, and have taken a liking to Old Mine cuts. What is a reasonable price (or range) for a GIA-certified "Old Mine Brilliant", 2.70-2.80 carats, J-K color, VS clarity? I haven't seen it in person. I wanted to get opinions of what a reasonable price should be. I don't have any videos. Just a low-resolution mini-photo,which is blurry. Thanks for any input!

I generally use old world diamonds as a comparison for what a retail price would be. So they had a 2.8ct ish J SI for 28k ish. Mind you there's a difference in J vs K colour too.

There's a few factors for old mine cuts, there may be a little premium for a better cut stone. But I would estimate a good price is around 20% less than retail. If all else equal does this stone have a GIA report?

Not a lot out there right now. I just did a quick search of some value internet retailers. I'd say you're looking at ballpark $24-25k easily.

OK, thank you guys so much!! It does have a GIA report; I am trying to get a copy. But those are the stats that I was given. J color, 2.8 carats, appx 8mm squarish-cushion shape. I'll take a look at old world diamonds, and look for comparables! I had asked a NY diamond dealer (friend of a friend) and he thought 4-5k per carat was correct. So, I really had no idea what to expect.

Old cuts in this color range trade at a premium compared to modern cut stones. A J 2.8 ct SI1 or high clarity would be a steal for $15k- as long as it's decently cut.

This "value" retailer has a few OEC options but not OMC.

Yeah remember lots of crappy cut stones out there and it can affect price too! $15k sounds too good to be true from a dealer. More in line with an eBay super deal.

Its a pretty wide range - 15k to 25k. I think the question posed to the dealer was along the lines of "for an antique old mine cut, 2.7-2.8, color J-K, with GIA report, what do you think it's worth? And he said it was hard to say without seeing them, but 4 to 5K per carat. Maybe he was thinking that was a dealer's price? Vs retail?

IS the seller an established dealer, or private individual?
There've been so many cases of someone claiming a stone is such and such grade, but then the "cert" turns out to be from Joes Gem Lab and Sandwich shop......

Make sure you get a GIA report number and verify it online......

There is also a difference in price between genuine antiques that have not been retouched versus genuine antiques that have been retouched versus generic newly-cut vintage-style old mines versus the branded newly-cut ideally-performing old mines. It's hard to say what the dealer was thinking of.

Sounds like he pulled a number out of his a$$ and didn’t know lol Maybe he though you meant resale.

For comparison.

I recall him saying that's an older stone and the price couldn't be replicated now if he had to source something new... maybe true maybe not lol. But its a gorgeous stone and price!

I feel the clarity played into the price. It is also natural. Gorgeous stone <3

The seller is an established vintage jewelry dealer. Sells a lot of branded vintage stuff, like VC&A, old Cartier baubles. She happened to have some rando old mines in rings and earrings in her stock. Ill get the GIA report. U know, I've never purchased from an IG dealer. I'd be really nervous for >15k purchase from a guy in Instagram.... But wow. That's a gorgeous stone!!

Hi, I believe you to be David from diamonds by Lauren is this right? I’ve been trying to reach you on instagram as I’ve seen some of your posts about 60/60 diamonds and would love your help with a diamond I recently purchased - I know that is a bit cheeky considering it isn’t a sale for you but you seem like an informed guy who wants to help people out! Please let me know if I can send you a message :)

On PS trade members aren’t allowed to comment on diamonds from other vendors.

But there are a lot of prosumers on here that could help you. You should start a thread in Rocky Talky!

Thank for ur help! Ive been looking at more online and IG Vendors, bc now i see there are a whole lot more options out there. What is going on with this video? Looks like tons of black pepper dots. Are these all reflections? It won't let me upload video bc of extension. Here is the link

Can you guys recommend other "value" retailers or online or IG vendors, specifically for antique diamonds - old mine cuts? I prefer loose, bc i hate to dismantle a piece to extract a stoneI... I've got on my list:

47 jewelry
Jewels by grace
Cjd_sako
Alex park
Old world diamonds

JbG and OWD aren't "value" vendors.

I think:
Jewels by Whitney
Rita on the rocks and 88 Star could source you something
Jacob K
Xothebijouxbox - Dolly
Gildedlane
Sincityfinds
Vanessa at heritage jewelry

Those are carbon inclusions-probably why GIA grade this a SI2!

Why isn't it graded as I1, I2, or I3, if the inclusions are clearly visible without 10x magnification? GIA report says SI2.
