I found a gorgeous diamond while looking at diamonds yesterday. I just want to know if this is a good deal or not...

1.38 F-Color VVS2 $13,100
Cut: Ex
Polish: Ex
Symm: VG
Table: 58
Depth: 59

The stone looks absolutely gorgeous but was about 3K more than I wanted to spend. I'm considering it only because of how perfect it looks with it's F color and VVS2 clarity. It's also GIA certified. In the end does it being this perfect matter or could I find something as perfect to the visible eye for a lot less? From what I've seen VS1/2 around that size are just as costly.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: The girdle is Thin-Medium

Hi zero,

Need more info please. Can you also post the following info which you will find on the grading report -

crown and pavilion angles
diameter in MM
star and lower girdle facet percentages
Fluorescence if applicable

You could definitely go lower in both colour and clarity as long as the all important cut quality is great and still have a very clean and white diamond, maybe you could look at GIA or AGS graded G or H colour and VS1 or VS2 clarity.

Thanks!! What other info do you need, the rest of the details listed on the GIA report?

Yes please, I edited to list the info needed above!

This was the only additional info I was able to get without the report in front of me:

CA: 31.5
PA: 41.2 degree
St: 55
LH: 80%

Diameter 7.27-7.4

EDIT: Forgot to mention there is NO Fluorescence.

Please let me know if that makes any sense to you, because it doesn't make any sense to me. =)

Thanks again

Crown angle is very shallow. Will be a brilliant stone but not much fire, a BIC (brilliant ideal cut). Good spread though, face up diameter is larger than TIC (tolkowsky ideal cut) stone.

That''s not necessarily a bad thing, right? From my research, it seems as though the shallower crown angle just makes it more brilliant instead of "firey."

Please correct me if I''m wrong, I''m new to this...

Yap, not necessary a bad thing, just depends on your preference.

Thanks!

What exactly does this mean? Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

TIC is a more balance ideal cut, brilliance and fire about equal play. The stone you posted above will be a BIC, cut towards brilliance and usually has a bigger diameter. For example, a TIC stone of the same weight will have a diameter of about 7.16mm.

The only weird thing is the large variance in your stone's diameter, is there a typo?

Depends on your preference.

Thanks! The typo may have just been me misunderstanding my jeweler over the phone.. =)

What do you think about the price?

Considering this is about 2-3K more than I wanted to spend, do you think I could easily find a G / VS1-2 for 2-3K that looks just as good? I don''t want to lose that F color stone but at the same time, I don''t want to rush into purchasing it. I think I might be focusing too much on "mind-clean" vs. "eye-clean"

Unlikely you will be able to tell between a F and G color unless you are trained, color sensitive and/or place them side by side. Clarity even more unlikely as long as it is eye-clean an SI1 will look just like an IF.

Some suggestions.

If you are interested in the JA stone, ask for a Heart image as it is sold as a H&A stone.

I really like these two however I''m a bit reluctant to purchase online. I''m also worried about what my jeweler would think if I bought the stone from someone other than him considering he''s making my custom setting... =)

I do feel a lot more comfortable with all the reports and the lighting tests. That''s something you don''t really get to see when you''re at a brick and mortar store (especially in the diamond district in NYC).

hmm...

GoodOldGold is based in Long Island, sounds like you are in the neighborhood, you should pay them a visit. I think you need to make an appointment with them first. They do custom work too.

Didn''t even notice that, thanks!

Just out of curiosity, do you think the 1.38ct F color stone in my original post is a good deal?

If you have the time to go to GOG then that would be a great help to you, you will need an appointment so call first. The diamond you posted might be ok but its hard to tell without images, it is geared more towards brilliance than fire so if that is what you are looking for it might be a contender.
