Hello.

This post and the next has two GIA certs for two different cushion cuts.

I noticed the right-hand one of the two drawings showing the inclusions are very different. The one below (dated Jan 2006) kinda resembles an X.

The second one (dated Feb 2006) is more like a star. I''ve noticed this latter is more common for the Cushions.

Why are they so radically different? What may (potentially) be the difference in terms of brilliance, etc?

Here''s the 2nd cert.

i would expect chunkier flash from the bottom one

anyone else?

I was going to say I think the first one seems better? Do not really know why, how do the dimensions seem? first stone is longer and narrower, second is wider, not sure it would appear that much different to the naked eye...depth pretty similar...if I am not hallucinating (it is nearly 2:00 am here...) anyway, the first one is vg/vg and the second is not, and otherwise they seem pretty similar to me... but the mark on the first stone seems more significant...

citizen- there is not much you can tell from the certs. You would *really* need to see these in person to make a brilliance determination. They may also look quite different. The first one reminds me of a cushette cert! .I did just want to note that I wonder if the inclusion in the firdt one is visible despite being a vs2? Is that the primary inclusion? I'm no expert...you need to see these or have a trusted vendor make the call/bring them both in ...

The look between these two stones is VERY different--i actually just looked at two cushions with those different cuts. The first stone more resembles a radiant (more brilliance in the center of the stones, and (i think) more sparkle--at least in the one i saw). I think the frequently used term for this cut is a 'cushion modified brilliant' . The second stone is a 'cushion brilliant' and has chunkier facets and is closer to an original cushion cut (some people prefer it for its more antique-y look), to me this cut looked hollow in the centre, but maybe it was just the one stone i viewed.

I got a lot of the info from the video tutorial by Mark T. of Engagement rings direct on the homepage of pricescope---and from reading tons of stuff here!

Hope that helps

forgot to mention that there are even more variations on the cushion cut--check out some of the threads on this forum--cushions are so popular right now, but the old mine cuts have been around forever and are not very brilliant compared to today's standards, so in attempt to improve the cut, all these variations are appearing. It took me awhile to wrap my head around it all (i am still searching) and what you'll keep hearing is that you need to see the variations b/c the cuts produce such a range of modern to antique appearance, all under the general description of 'cushion"

Thanks everyone. That''s great info.

hi,

definitely watch the video featuring Mark, it''s all about the cushion cut from the cushion expert himself! it''s under the video gallery link here:

And watch the 2nd video "Interview with Mark Turnowski"
seriously lots of info about cushions, and particularly addresses your issue.

As I remember Mark referred to the first one (modified brilliant) as looking like "crushed ice" and similar to a radiant, basically cut for lots of sparkle and fire. the regular old "cushion brilliant" is a more traditional cushion cut like Jas12 says, with fewer facets and thus less pointy sparkles. It all depends on your tastes for which look you prefer.

There''s just so many varieties of cushions it''s just crazy.

They are all holding back on you CitizenKane. it is a conspiracy!

We experts can tell what way the wind was blowing on the day these diamonds were cut, the type of hair-oil the polisher used and his middle name. We know what he wispered to his co-workers and where the rough was mined and the temperature that day.

Brilliance and fire we can measure to the third decimal place. It is all there in the fine print on the GIA reports.
