Hi all,

I'm new here so I apologise if this is the wrong forum??

Looking at the above thread and it's pertinent to an issue my wife has, but rather than raise the question in that topic, I thought it best to start a new topic.

She has a pair of 3 stone stud earrings (if that's a correct description) with screwbacks. The screwbacks are thick for her piercings and it's painful/time consuming to get them on or off. (as described by several posters). The problem is exacerbated by the fact she has small earlobes which mean she has to have the screws very tight to stop the earrings 'flopping'. Each earring has 3 x 0.27 carat stones set in 18k white gold.

We see the discussion on the various options, our questions are:-

1) Can anyone comment on, is it possible/ how easy is it to change the screw type on the earrings.

2) Do the tradespeople here think a jeweler could do the work in 3/4 days??

The reason for these questions is that where we live it's difficult to find jewelers we'd trust to do the job. So we're thinking of having it done while we're on holiday sometime soon either in USA (probably New England) or Australia (Sydney or Cairns)

Many thanks for any feedback.

Diamondgeezer, it shouldn't be a hard thing to replace the posts on a pair of earrings. If you decide you want a recommendation for a good manufacturing jeweller in Sydney, let me know. As to whether or not he has the time to do a 3 day turn around, you will have to ask him directly. Only he will know his workload.

Thanks Misskittycat,

Yes it seemed to me that it should be a fairly straightforward job. We're likely to be in Sydney later this year so yes I'd appreciate your recommendation.

Many thanks

A lot depends on the style of the mounting and whether it is a simple job to remove one post and solder on another. (It usually is, but it is dangerous to give you a "blanket" answer in case you have one of the few that will be problematic.) Missycat has given you excellent advice to call ahead and make an appointment. Just keep calling until you find a jeweler who will say yes.

I am not a big fan of screw backs for the very reasons that you mention, they are thicker than most other posts and can be painful to get in and out. In addition, the threads are subject to a buildup of detritus and can with the ratcheting effect of putting them in and out can cause micro abrasions which are then easily infected by the bacteria in that detritus. To me it has always seemed like wearing muddy shoes into the living room of a nice home.

As for the flopping. When you call to make your appointment, ask him to order in a few pairs of plastic disks to be worn behind the earlobes. These will help tremendously with the flopping and cost next to nothing. Get a few pairs so that when you inevitably lose one, you will have a replacement.

If your chosen jeweler is not familiar with these disks, ask him to email me and I will get him the part number from Stuller so that he can see what I am talking about. If I was in Australia I would just send you a pair, I think I have a lifetime supply of them in a drawer in my office.

Your wife will enjoy having earrings she can wear comfortably. Having been married now for over forty years, I can honestly say that you will enjoy having a happier wife.

Wink,

Many thanks for the comprehensive and helpful reply, if we don't get it done in Sydney this year then it will be the US next year - and then we'll take you up on the plastic discs!!

Thanks again

Hi Misskittycat

I'd be grateful for the manufacturing jeweler reference in Sydney that you mentioned.

Many thanks!
