Hi all,

I just received my new pear and took some pictures of it to show to my girlfriend for her approval, and she's disappointed with a few parts of it.

The stats are:

Shape/Cutting Style: Pear Brilliant
Color: F
Clarity: VS2
Measurements: 9.92 x 6.41 x 3.79
Carat Weight: 1.35
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: Medium Blue
Depth: 59.1%
Table: 57%
Girdle: Thin - Thick (Faceted)
Cutlet: None
Inclusions (From GIA cert graph): 2 small crystals, not visible from table view
Crown Height: 12.3%
Crown Angle: 29.2 degrees
Pavilioin Depth: 43.5%
Pavilion Angle: 40.8 degrees

Amount paid: $7240

The two main issues that she has are lack of fire and [too much] bowtie. The bowtie definitely exists, but from what I was told by the people who sold it, it was much smaller than some of the other options that we had been looking at had. As to fire, I'm not much of an expert when it comes to diamonds, so I don't know the easiest way to tell, but it definitely has a lot of white-sparkle.

Part of the issue may be with the pictures I'm taking. I got home with the stone after it had gotten dark, so I wasn't able to get any natural-light pictures, so all I could really get were images from the lamp in my room, which had a yellow hue to it ad made it harder to get a good idea of the white color. (I'm going to try to get some daylight photos tomorrow)

I'm going to try to post some pictures of it, and if you could give me any opinions on the stone, any things to look for that are good/bad, and whether you think it's worth returning to try to find one with more fire/less bowtie, comparable in size/price.

Thanks in advance for any help!

the bowtie seems to be pretty apparent in the last picture.

fire is all about lighting. this lighting is not good for fire.

i agree- too much bowtie. my pear does not look like that.

no bowtie for comparison.

Are you saying that your GF has an issue because she wants more of a visible bow tie or less of one?...I have a lovely 2 ct pear and it has a bow tie which isn't observable in a normal face up position, but it is when tilted downwards, this can make a difference as to it's visibility.

Sorry for not being specific enough...too much bowtie is the issue.

Sorry - not enough coffee for me! Anyway I am posting this link for you which might help you with your pear.

Fancies can look very different from each other with slight variances in proportion, if your GF isn't keen on this one - keep looking - the right one is out there somewhere! Sometimes it can take a while with fancy cuts to find the one, indeed so with rounds! Read up on the part about pears and bowties, that should help a lot.

I agree with your girlfriend. I would not be happy with a dark bowtie like that also you have spent quite a bit of money so I am sure you could get a better one. Pears all have a bowtie but some look more whiter like the colour of the rest of the diamond from top view. I think you should definitely change it for the money you have spent. Maybe take some pictures in daylight also incase that is affecting the look too much.

If she wants a pear, then that is it, but if she prefers fire does she know she would get more from a round.

Hey all, I''m the girlfriend being referred to

A bit more background info for everyone - we''ve both been religiously reading pricescope forums and adding to our diamond knowledge, and decided on some stats that would look good on paper. We also decided to go with a reputable online vendor who''s recieved nothing but good reviews around here to help us find a diamond w/ the right stats, but also one that is visibly pleasing.

We had specifically asked for little to no bowtie, and when they found this diamond for us, they assured us that it had NO visible bowtie. When we recieved the Sarin report, we saw the 40x closeup and the idealscope image, both of which had a few of the black facets indicating a bowtie. This should have been a warning, but the vendor assured us that there was hardly any bowtie at all and that it was a very nice diamond and very firey and shimmery.

When I saw these pictures, I pretty much flipped, as this is NOT my idea of ''hardly any bowtie'', let alone the original promise of "NO bowtie whatsoever". This whole process has been very frustrating, and I have no idea where to go from this point. I have my heart set on a pear cut diamond, and I understand that most have bowties, so what do you do when you specifically ask to have those diamonds weeded out? How do you buy from a ''reputable'' online vendor who you entrust to be your eyes if this is their idea of little/no bowtie?

Side question: Is this the online process that is to be expected? Each time you want to view a diamond, you have to purchase it?? I can see this process getting old REALLY fast.

i have a suggestion. pears are out of style right now. people are getting rid of them! YOU know what you are looking for. YOU know more than most vendors.

go pawn shopping, scour the newspaper ads, buy used. you can find a good used pear for next to nothing and have it reset. mine is 1.25 carat - I bought it for 2000 US dollars, from a pawn shop.

take matters into your own hands. go get ''em tiger!

Vicks,
The pavilion facets of a diamond are cut to a specific angle range in order to best reflect the light back to the viewer. When one cuts a diamond that is longer than it is wide, either the side facets or the end facets will no longer be at the correct angles. If you wish to have a marquise, pear, or oval you will have a bow-tie showing in your diamond.
The best way to find a fancy shape diamond that pleases you find a brick and mortar jeweler that has experience with fancies and have them order 5 or 6 for you to pick from. Buying a fancy shape diamond through the mail might not be the best idea.

Ladykemma that is an AMAZING deal, but is it really that common to strike gold at a pawn shop like that?

Also, can I ask the stats of your diamond? It looks flawless!

i have no stats, estimated at 1.25 carat with ruler/calipers. there is a crystal cluster visible with a loupe at 4 o'clock.

yes, you can find nice things at pawn shops. i shop pawn shops weekly, when i get paid. you have to have an open mind. you never know what you will see. it will take about six months to find what you want. also, as the owners get to know you, they will hold items back for you to see.

yesterday i found an old european cut 44 point diamond in an antique setting with about 30 point old european cut sidestones marked for $600. $300 was what he wanted for it. it's still there if anyone in houston wants directions.

edited to add: i think pears are on the way back into style.

I think it depends on where in the US you live. I searched pawn shops here in Florida and didn''t find a thing to my liking. Mostly small rounds are available here. The larger stone I found had inclusions that broke the surface of the stone. I did find a 3 stone ring that was about what I''d pay from an online vendor. But I didn''t want a 3 stone.

So happy shopping and good luck.

I agree that pear has a big ole bow tie. Try working with GOG, that''s where I just got my 2.02 Oval for my 20th anniversary. Now bow tie what so ever. I''m sure Jonathon can find you an amazing pear. They are out there!!! I love pears, and hope you find one that makes your heart sing!!

Good luck!!

The shape-profile outline is very nice. What I really dislike is the bowtie. I find it quite apparent..and for the kind of cash you spent, you surely deserve something nicer.

Very nice looking pear. Can''t wait to see the final product. How exciting!
