question on appraisers

Hi folks -

just starting out the diamond buying process, after reading these very informative posts on this site for the last month or so. I am planning to buy the stone online. But do more people tend to get it appraised locally, or send it out of state to an appraiser that is listed in pricescope? I live in Boston area, and didn't see appraisers listed in MA on the pricescope site.

What have people's experiences been with the appraisal process?

Some people check diamonds locally, other send them to David Atlas. There are also people who feel comfortable with the vendor and do not require appraisal at all.
