OK, you Leon owners... a question for you, please.

In so many of Leon's photos, his platinum looks almost like a gunmetal gray... not the shiny white/silver that I typically think of when I think of platinum... and certainly not the color I see when I look down 1,000 times a day at my own rings!

For example, here's a Leon (LE's ring):
LEWFLM2.jpg

LEWFLM1.jpg

And here's a Leon... (Harriet's ring)
HLMII.jpg
HLM1.jpg

And here are my rings, for example:

See the difference in the color of the metal? Is the color of the platinum in Leon's photos just the background and the lighting? Or does Leon use some special plat alloy or technique that causes his platinum to be a different color?

Inquiring minds and all that, you know!!!

THANKS!

Lynn

Off to go pull out my RH Oval Leon ring... brb....

To compare colors both object must be in the same picture. (just like with diamond color grades)

Light sources actually have different color.
We usually are not conscious of this because our brains automatically compensate in real life, but a camera can't.
If the camera's white balance setting is not exactly matched to the kind of light used that can change the color of how things appear in the pic.

Also reflective things, like polished metal, pick up the color of their surroundings.

The first two pics are much more yellow than the last two pics and the first is a good example of the camera not being set to match the light source.

If someone owns a LM ring and another platinum ring they will take a pic of the rings together, then we can see if the metals appear to be different in color.

Perhaps LM likes his pics to have this old-world sepia look; I'm sure he's professional enough to know about white balance camera settings.

Lynn,

My Leon ring is much brighter and lighter in color than the one in the pic.. It''s not as light in color as the WF ring.

I am thinking it''s the pics?? I dont know what WF uses, nor do I know what Leon uses

Hoping someone who knows can answer this.

Kenny makes a good point, and know that he knows a lot about photography...

Hi Lynn B

The platinum in my Leon is very shiny, fluid, and beautiful. The stamp on the inside says pt950

It''s just the lighting and the photography settings.

My Leon Mege platinum ring is the exact same color as my Whiteflash platinum band.

hmm, mine looks normal - when it''s clean.

Lynn,

Sooooo, are we going for a new setting?? Spill it woman!!!

Lynn, that is 100% a difference in lighting!!!! Leon uses the best platinum...95 platinum/ 5 ruthenium. It is more durable (less scratches which is what makes them turn gray looking) than the 95 plat/ 5 iridium. My platinum in no way looks gray.

Hey, DS, thanks for the note. What do you know about the 95 plat/5 iridium vs. the 95 plat/5 ruthenium? Can you direct me to any links or threads that discuss this?

THANKS!

Thanks to everyone for the comments and posts.

If anyone does have a Leon and another platinum ring from someone else that they could photgraph side by side, that would be interesting.

I'm thinking it's all the lighting, too... or at least 95% lighting! I still wanna know more about the plat alloy he uses that DS mentioned.

But anyway, what prompted this thread was the fact that I think a large part of what I gravitate to (regarding Leon's rings) is that unusual metal color... or at least the old world *aura* surrounding his photos.

Learning here that his platinum looks basically the same as everyone else's quality platinum pieces takes some of the *mystery* and *allure* out of it, for sure!!!

It could be the lighting or setting the camera to NOT match whatever lighting is used, or just shifting the color afterwards with software.

Photography is a powerful and influential thing.
Smart business people know this and have been using it to their advantage for a long time.

This is a great example.
Customers are left thinking one vendor even has a special alloy, when all it was was a the the deft change camera setting away from what would be considered accurate.

I don't think there is anything unethical about it, but an informed consumer can make better-informed decisions.

Scroll down and you''ll read about platinum alloys:

http://journal.pricescope.com/Articles/47/1/An-Overview-Of-Common-Alloys-Used-In-Jewelry.aspx

Both Leon and Tiffany''s use the plat/ruthenium combo because of it''s durability.

My platinum ring is shiny and white. My white gold settings which were rhodium plated looked a little more chrome-like to me. My SIL has the plat/iridium, and hers was soooooo gray (or maybe it would be kinder to say that it had a significant patina) very soon because of all the minute scratches.

I don''t have that, but I did take some pics of my Leon with my 14k WG WB, they are on page 7, maybe that would help? As well as the (many) pics in good daylight. Pics are on pgs. 1, 2, 6 and 7.

I can''t believe you''re changing that gorgeous setting Lynn, I just love it.

Sorry.

So Lynn, have you changed your mind about the bezel, or maybe thinking bezel halo?

Leon uses a better alloy of platinum than WF. WF uses 950 Iridium Platinum which is nice and white, but soft. 950 Ruthenium Platinum, which is what Leon uses, tends to be a bit grayer, but harder and stronger.

I don''t have a LM piece, but I do have 2 platinum rings that seem to wear differently. My Scott Kay ring is marked PLAT and stays shiney and scratch free longer than my Shane Co. band that''s marked PLATINUM-L. Don''t know which mix they are, but I wear them together, and they do look different on the palm side.

Scott Kay uses Ruthenium alloy as well as Tiffany and Leon. It is quite scratch resistant as platinum goes.

Verrrry interesting! Thank you ALL for your feedback and input. As always, invaluable! Nothing like bringing something to the PS kitchen table!

OK, re-set announcement coming very soon.

Stay tuned!

I want to know right now!!

I''m sure the difference in color is in the lighting and pics. The allure is in his work - if you can work with him. I''m sure his quality of platinum is of the first water and his workmanship leaves us all gasping.

Good luck - but SPILL THE BEANS WOMAN!!!

ooo lynn..how exciting! I can''t wait to hear what you decide on.

Hey, I didn''t know anyone else but me checked on the platinum alloys!

Okay, Lynn, we''re waiting for the announcement.

I was just logging on to ask the same question. I am so drawn to the "color" of the platinum in his pictures. I am kind of sad to find out its just the lighting. I love the color that appears in the pictures.
