i am looking for a very good pear cut engagement ring. i have noticed on a round cut diamond that the GIA has the cut grade on it, but the GIA''s for a pear only have the polish and symmetry but not the cut grade. Why is that and how would I be able to tell, in a store, if the cut grade is as best as it gets for a pear? Thanks

GIA as yet do not assign a cut grade to fancy shapes. I take it your GF wants a pear cut rather than a round or other shape? It is best when choosing fancy shapes, to judge by your own eyes and pick a diamond you find pleasing to you. Here is a chart which will give you a point of reference for suggested proportions for a pear, but if you find one you love which is outside of suggested range, then do consider it, as sometimes a pear with less than ideal proportions can be a stunner! See if your vendor can supply you with an ASET image which is invaluable for fancy shapes, but if the main thing is to buy one which speaks to you!
