My husband bought me a beautiful ring, and it has a GIA certification. The information on it is as follows:

Round Brilliant
5.79 x 5.83 x 3.57mm

Carat Weight: .73
Color Grade: H
Clarity Grade: SI1
Cut Grade: Excellent (does this mean Ideal?)

Clarity Characteristics: Twinning Wisp (under the 10x magnification I couldn''t see ANYTHING on the stone, so I''m guessing this is a faintly visible inclusion?)
Finish -
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: Faint (It''s being sized right now, but does that usually mean blue or yellow? I was hoping for one with blue fluorescence)

Depth: 61.4%
Table: 56%
Crown Angle: 34.0°
Crown Height: 15.0%
Pavilion Angle: 40.8°
Pavilion Depth: 43.0%
Star length: 50%
Lower Half: 75%
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick, Faceted (3.5%)
Culet: None

We paid $6,300 for the entire ring - it''s 18K gold with a total carat weight of 2cts... The main stone was the only only GIA Graded but apparently the other stones are supposed to have the same excellent rating on polish and symmetry.

Does it sound like we got a good diamond for the price? I''m new to this, and I think it''s beautiful either way...I''d just like to know if I have more bragging rights, lol

Numbers look promising. Price is on the high side but that depends on the exact setting you got. Online price for the center stone is about 2k.

Sounds lovely...do you have any pictures you can post?

Not yet, but I''ll have it back from sizing on Thursday and can post some pictures then. Do you have any suggestions for taking a good picture of it? I have macro on my camera and would take a picture in daylight but other than that, not sure what else will help get a good picture of it.

If the diamond would cost about 2k on the internet, then the setting should be valued at around 4k for what you paid to be a good value. I am guessing then that you overpaid somewhat for the main diamond compared to what you could get online, but that is normal at B&M stores.

The numbers look great on the cut, so that is good news!

Something I forgot to add in the description is that the main stone is supposed to be a hearts and arrows cut. I got to see a loose one under a scope of some kind - it was really, really pretty - it looked like a kaleidoscope! Does that make a difference as to whether or not it was a good choice for the money?

Some more details, until I can get pics up (it''s being sized)

It''s a main stone with two smaller ones on each side, and down each side of the band is three even smaller ones on each side...the matching wedding band is the same past/present/future setup with three smaller stones on either side of the main past/present/future diamonds.

And, my husband got it at Helzberg. It''s supposed to be one of their Diamond Masterpiece stones. I suggested buying online but he wasn''t comfortable with that, so we did the best we could in an actual store.

I just hope we didn''t do poorly with our decision. We got a military discount because my husband is Active Duty Navy also...so that was about $700 off.

As I mentioned, you did overpay relative to the internet, but it sounds like you got a great cut on your diamond and the setting sounds lovely. Are you planning to return it if you think you overpaid? If not, then just enjoy

Possibly, for something else - but if we overpaid on that one it''s probably safe to assume we''d overpay on any of them...we''re past a return period because this was my upgrade from my other ring I think. But, I do love the set - I''m just hoping it will be as sparkly as I remember it being in the store (Even under the tables or with all the light blocked!), because I think that''s the thing that would make me the most sad...losing the beautiful sparkle it had.

The diamond is very well cut looking at the numbers, so it should perform well. I think that you are correct that using the same company, you will not find a better "deal". But diamonds cost more at B&M stores, so your probably paid a fair price. At least you got a well cut diamond! Lots of people come back with much worse stories and no abilities to even trade in to get a better cut!

I think you should just sit back and relax and enjoy what you have! And post pictures when you can!

Thanks! That makes me feel a lot better. I should have the ring back Thursday and I''ll definitely be posting pics ASAP. (Even 5 days seems like agony, I can''t imagine if we''d gotten custom and waited 8 weeks!)
