Purging closet

Funny this should come up. I have to clean out the basement and master bedroom closet. Garage and front hall closet need attention too. I do donate and throw out ...but not enough. I read somewhere that the time it takes to tend to clutter (dust, rearrange, pack, unpack, etc. really takes precious time that can be devoted to fun. I get that as I have spent days cleaning, clearing, packing, repacking, tossing out, donating, my junk that could have been spent doing fun things. I do enjoy purging and donating items but it takes me years to let go of stuff. I think for me it is holiday decorations and clothes/shoes (I don't wear or fit me anymore) that are the most difficult to get rid of.:wall: Emotional attachment to dead relatives' items are also hard. :wall:I have organized my kids' mementos in sheet protectors inside three ring binders and dated them by year which took me forever. But it was well worth it as it is now organized and looks great.

Sell everything you don't use and use the money for bling :P2:mrgreen2: (Personally, I just give things away, but I probably should sell some of them... :geek2:)

Sell everything you don't use and use the money for bling....

I did this today. I have sold old Vera Bradley and Lilly Pulitzer pieces on eBay myself (many years ago) but never consigned anything. I always gave people my clothing. I did sell one diamond through a jeweler. Today I listed 23 designer pieces of clothing, shoes, purses, and one Louis Vuitton belt with TheRealReal.com. (I"m not even sure how you spell it!) I believe I first heard of it on the radio and recently I bought a used black patent leather belt (Burberry) through them. I decided that many gorgeous items that that had been taking up closet space-most with tags still on-should really go. I felt like an idiot for unloading things for pennies on the dollar, but the alternative was to store them forever. The purses (one Louis Vuitton and one Prada) have never even been carried.) I have to have two Burberry coats cleaned before they will accept those for consignment.

I don't think I'm a hoarder but I'm having a hard time purging my shoes. Shoes I haven't worn in years. I keep thinking what if I want them at some point in time. And I know that I won't. But what if???
I should mention they will be donated. And the ones in question are practically new. Does anyone else go through this? Any tips?

For me, clothing and shoes don't seem to be a problem, though I do wish I could get past that "sunk cost" thing and not want to recoup things that I should just donate. I want to resell a lot and expect top dollar for too many things. (My Tiffany Band is not something I will take a big hit on though, and it's literally as if it came out of the case.)

I would try to sell them. Bring them to Plato's Closet or other clothing consignment shop and they will give you cash for them.
I have a lot of shoes I haven't worn for a few years but like you, I'm hesitant to give them up. But my daughter is going to be 17 soon and she wears my size, so I'll probably keep them in case she wants them.
I was thinking about reorganizing my closet. I was thinking about hanging all my clothes by matching color. Right now I have short sleeves together, long sleeves together and sweaters on a separate side.
I went into an open house the other day and they had color matched all the clothes in the closet and I thought that was cool.
Anyway, I digress but I might just do it this weekend.

I don' know if you guys do this in the US (I'm a Londoner :) ) but I did a colour course with House Of Colour and also a Style Analysis course.

This really helped me identify what to get rid of so I'm a Sultry Winter which means my colours need to be deep blue tones or Icy white tones and also I'm a Dramatic Gamine which means I can't get away with florals or flowy items for example. This clearly didn't stop me from buying stuff outside of my ideal range!!

It makes it easier to shop & clearr out things knowing what suits your personality. I think celebrities must get this done all the time!! I've just cleared out 3 huge bags of clothes I've not worn in years or have OVER worn and now look old.

It's really hard looking at stuff you've spent $300+ on (single items) and will never wear but in a way it humbles you into not buying stuff without thinking it through! Sometimes we learn the hard way.
