Funny this should come up. I have to clean out the basement and master bedroom closet. Garage and front hall closet need attention too. I do donate and throw out ...but not enough. I read somewhere that the time it takes to tend to clutter (dust, rearrange, pack, unpack, etc. really takes precious time that can be devoted to fun. I get that as I have spent days cleaning, clearing, packing, repacking, tossing out, donating, my junk that could have been spent doing fun things. I do enjoy purging and donating items but it takes me years to let go of stuff. I think for me it is holiday decorations and clothes/shoes (I don't wear or fit me anymore) that are the most difficult to get rid of.
Emotional attachment to dead relatives' items are also hard.
I have organized my kids' mementos in sheet protectors inside three ring binders and dated them by year which took me forever. But it was well worth it as it is now organized and looks great.
