Hi all,

I don't know much about recutting a diamond so I'm not sure if this is a horrible idea. There are quite a few large (2.5-3 carat) rounds in my price range with good color/clarity but a so so cut-- the ones with a super awesome cut are more than I want to spend. So, I was wondering if it would be crazy or not to purchase one with a so so cut and send it to BGD to recut?

Any info/opinions would be much appreciated!

TIA!

What size are looking for? With a recut you lose a lot of weight and that large stone becomes a not so large stone. I can't give you estimates on the size it would become, but it would be probably more cost efficient to find a smaller stone with a cut that you can live with.

Around 9+mm. I *think* the 2 recuts I've seen here (by BGD and Singlestone) didn't lose much mm at all. And if I went with a 9.3mm and it shrunk to 9mm but with an awesome cut, I'd be delighted.

I'm not looking for a smaller stone so if recutting a RB is a bad idea I'll go with a cushion or maybe a pear. :)

Is there a nice return policy on the diamond? If so, you can have it sent to Brian, and see what he says about how much loss the will occur. I think it's hard to say whether it'll just lose weight but not too much mm without an expert's opinion.

I could do that since they have a 30 day return period. The few I have seen on here did lose a bit of carat weight but not too much face up size.

What would bug you more then, the loss of carat weight, or the loss of mm? If it has minimal mm loss, then you certainly would still have a good finger spread - could be worth the loss of carat weight.

That's what I was thinking :) But, I'm not sure of any other "risk" factors besides loss of carat weight/spread...

I guess I'm thinking there must be other risks or why isn't it done more often? Less well cut stones are a lot less $ than an ideal cut and a recut is relatively cheap.

There is always the risk of the stone shattering on the wheel and no one, the cutter or an insurance company, is going to cover for that risk. So you might end up with a much smaller stone.

Hi Sc! Thanks for replying. Are there any factors which make this risk much higher or could it happen to any stone?

I think Brian has to evaluate the inclusions in the stone and see if any of the "beauty marks" might cause a problem
during recut. I dont know which inclusions are the ones that cause a problem. I'm sure the location of the inclusion
is also a consideration. But...if you pick a stone that has high clarity are you able to eliminate most of the issues???

Oh ok. Well, I could buy the stone and send it right off to Brian to check it out and only be out shipping fees if it won't work. It'd be handy to know which type of inclusions pose a problem before I purchase anything though. Feathers near the girlde? I have no clue. :twirl:

And I'm not sure about a higher clarity.. VS may pose the same issues as SI depending on what type and where the inclusions are.. Anyone know anything on this?

No idea.

Just give Brian a call? You will probably get more information that way.

Good idea. I'll just shoot Denise an email. :)
